Oliver, Robert Tarbell, 1909-
Robert T. Oliver was born in 1909 in Oregon and attended the University of Wisconsin where he received his doctorate in Speech and American Literature. Before coming to Penn State, he taught at Clark Junior College, Bradley College, Bucknell University, and Syracuse University. Oliver wrote or collaborated on several speech books. Among these were Training for Effective Speech, Communicative Speech (which he co-authored with Paul Holtzman and Harold Zelko from Penn State), and The History of Public Speaking in America. For many years, Dr. Oliver specialized in the study of Korea. He was a close friend and advisor to former Korean President Syngman Rhee. He was also an advisor to the Korean Commission in Washington, and to the Korean delegation to the United Nations at Lake Success and Paris. Oliver wrote several books about Rhee and Korea. Among these are Syngman Rhee: The Man Behind the Myth, Verdict in Korea, The Truth About Korea and Why War Came to Korea.
