University of Alabama at Birmingham. Office of Public Relations and Marketing.

The Office of Public Relations and Marketing was created in 1990, but its origins may be traced to the 1960s. Fred Woodress was responsible for public relations activities from 1964 to 1969 as an assistant to vice president Joseph F. Volker. During this same period, Gloria Goldstein-Howton provided support for public relations activities for the Medical Center deans. In 1969, Dr. Volker reorganized public relations activities at UAB and created the Office of Public Affairs. Ms. Goldstein-Howton served as director of this office. Its successors included the Office of Institutional Relations (1978), Office of University Relations (1980), and the current Office of Public Relations and Marketing (1990). Ms. Goldstein-Howton served as director until 1990 when Mike Ellis succeeded her. He was given additional responsibilities over marketing activities, WBHM radio, UAB Report, and Creative Services. Like its predecessors, Public Relations and Marketing was responsible for informing the public and the news media about the people, events, and activities of the UAB community.
