Born, Budapest, Hungary, May 31, 1926. Emigrated to the U.S., 1940; naturalized, 1945. Valedictorian, George Washington High School, N.Y., 1943; BA and PhD in mathematics, Princeton, 1949. Assistant within the U.S. Army, Theoretical Division, Los Alamos Project, 1945-1946. Research assistant to Dr. Albert Einstein at the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton, 1948-49. Fine Instructor and Office of Naval Research Research Fellow in Mathematics, Princeton, 1949-51. Asst. prof. of philosophy, Princeton, 1951-53. Prof. of mathematics, Dartmouth, 1953; dept. chairman, 1955-67; Albert Bradley Third Century Professor, 1969-72; thirteenth president of the college, 1970-1981; prof. of mathematics and computer science, 1981-90; professor emeritus until his death, Dec. 26, 1992.
