Fine Instructor and Office of Naval Research Research Fellow in Mathematics, Princeton, 1949-51. Asst. prof. of philosophy, Princeton, 1951-53. Prof. of mathematics, Dartmouth, 1953; dept. chairman, 1955-67; Albert Bradley Third Century Professor, 1969-72; thirteenth president of the college, 1970-1981; prof. of mathematics and computer science, 1981-90; professor emeritus until his death, Dec. 26, 1992.
