Smithsonian Institution. Assistant Provost for Educational and Cultural Programs.
The Office of the Assistant Secretary for Public Service was established in 1968 to administer those Smithsonian offices not responsible to the Assistant Secretaries for Science or History and Art. The position was renamed the Assistant Secretary for Education and Public Service in 1992, though without much change in scope. The Office was placed under the Office of the Provost and again renamed Assistant Provost for Educational and Cultural Programs in 1994, and closed in 1995 as part of a reorganization.
William W. Warner was appointed Assistant Secretary for Public Service (Acting) in 1968 and Assistant Secretary in 1969. Julian T. Euell succeeded Warner in 1972 (Acting) and Assistant Secretary, 1973-1983. Peter Seitel served 1983-1984. Ralph Rinzler succeeded him, serving 1984-1990. James C. Early was Assistant Secretary for Public Service, 1990-1992, Assistant Secretary for Education and Public Service, 1992-1994, and Assistant Provost for Educational and Cultural Programs, 1995.
