Lucier, Charles V.

Charles V. Lucier was born in Clay Center, Kansas. He came to Alaska in 1942 and studied at the University of Alaska Fairbanks (1943-1945, 1947-1949). Lucier was drafted into military service in 1945 and was stationed at Elmendorf Air Force Base. After his service, he resumed his studies and received a B.A. degree in biology in 1949. Lucier studied Eskimo culture and house ruins at Kotzebue Sound (1950-1951), and did a field study of the culture of the Noatak Eskimos (1952). He taught in schools in Karluk and Talkeetna (1952-1955), and worked as a technician in small mammal studies (1955-1956). He returned to Anchorage in 1959 and later worked as a game biologist (1963-1979). Lucier participated in the Cook Inlet Native Association and Urban Natives United dance groups (1965-1975), and was involved in recording folklore in the Seward Peninsula, Norton Sound, and Kotzebue Sound regions (1960-1978).
