Wright, Benjamin, 1770-1842
Benjamin Wright (1770-1842) was a prominent land surveyor and engineer. During his career, he surveyed much of the lands along the upper Mohawk and Black River Valleys, which are now situated in Herkimer, Oneida, Lewis, and Jefferson Counties in New York State. Wright was also noted for his advocacy and development of canals and transportation infrastructure in New York State. He was chief engineer in the design and construction of the Erie Canal.
