In 1877 Tufts moved from New Hampshire to Atchison, Kansas, where he was employed as an assistant engineer by the Union Pacific Railroad. Although trained as a civil engineer at the New London (New Hampshire) Institute, by 1879, Tufts began to dabble in mortgage and real estate deals while still an employee of the Union Pacific Railroad. By the time of his death in 1905 Tufts was fully engrossed in his real estate and mortgage ventures.
