In 1877 Tufts moved from New Hampshire to Atchison, Kansas, where he was employed as an assistant engineer by the Union Pacific Railroad. Although trained as a civil engineer at the New London (New Hampshire) Institute, by 1879, Tufts began to dabble in mortgage and real estate deals while still an employee of the Union Pacific Railroad. By the time of his death in 1905 Tufts was fully engrossed in his real estate and mortgage ventures.
Tufts, a civil engineer trained in New Hampshire, came to Atchison, Kansas in 1877 and was employed as an assistant engineer on the Central Branch of the Union Pacific Railroad. In the late 1880s Tufts became involved in a group of investors and formed the Luray, Paradise, Sylvan Grove, and Lucas town companies. At his death in 1905 Tufts resided in Kansas City. He was a successful real estate and mortgage broker, and the receiver of the Kansas Trust and Banking Company of Atchison.
