Created by FSCW/FSU Phi Beta Kappa.
Originally founded in 1776 at the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia, Phi Beta Kappa is the oldest honor society in the United States. Florida State College For Women (FSCW) attained the first or Alpha charter in the state of Florida in March of 1935, making it the first state college for women in the South to receive this recognition. Phi Beta Kappa remains active at Florida State University to the present day. The original and founding members of the 1935 FSCW Phi Beta Kappa Alpha Chapter include: FSCW President Edward C. Conradi, Dean William G. Dodd, Rev. Mr. G. E. Benedict, Mrs. Ralph Eyman, Mr. Claude Pepper, and Mrs. Arthur Seymour; Charter Members: Kathryn T. Abbey, Mildred Burlingame, Dorothy Breen, Amy Briggs, Myrtle Dolbee, Margaret Whitney Dow, Dorothy Dishner, Olivia N. Dorman, Josiah B. Game, Viola Graham, Marion J. Hay, Marian Irish, Harold F. Richards, William H. Rogers, Arthur Seymour, Venila Lovina Shores, Elmer R. Smith, and Anna M. Tracy; Members in Course: Ida Engel, '35; Barbara Garfunkel, '35; Florence Jennings, '35; Rachel McKinnon, '35; and Frances Parks, '35; Alumnae Members: Agnes Edwards, '16; Inga Olla Helseth, '14; Effie Pettit, '09; Ruth Reynolds, '08; Felicia Williams Traxler, '14; Irita Bradford VanDoren, '08; and Edna Rees Williams, '20.
