District of Columbia. Public Library

The Washington City Free Library was established in 1895. The first library opened in 1896 at 1517 H Street, supported by contributions and subscriptions. In 1899 Andrew Carnegie offered $250,000 to build a free public library, and Congress provided a site. The Central Library opened in 1903, and the first D.C. branch opened in Takoma Park in 1911. In 1972 the Martin Luther King Memorial Library replaced the original Central Library.
