Biographical History
The Washington City Free Library was established in 1895. The first library opened in 1896 at 1517 H Street, supported by contributions and subscriptions. In 1899 Andrew Carnegie offered $250,000 to build a free public library, and Congress provided a site. The Central Library opened in 1903, and the first D.C. branch opened in Takoma Park in 1911. In 1972 the Martin Luther King Memorial Library replaced the original Central Library.
The Gregory genealogical collection is a collection of genealogical information on Black families of the Washington metropolitan area, solicited by Mrs. Francis A. Gregory, a member of the Board of Trustees of the D.C. Public Library.
