The Smith-Waln Family Papers consist mainly of legal and financial papers related to the business of the James Somers Smith, Richard Rundle Smith, Robert Waln, and Lewis Waln. The papers that predate the births and postdate the deaths of these four men were produced by miscellaneous Smith and Waln relatives. There are five series - James Somers Smith, Richard Rundle Smith, Robert Waln, Lewis Waln, and Miscellaneous. The Smith papers relate to their legal practice, while the Waln papers are rich in information about the operations of a nineteenth century mercantile firm and gristmill. This collection consists mainly of bills, receipts, land deeds, and business correspondence.

Papers consist of deeds relating to Nicholas Waln's land holdings in the Northern Liberties area of Philadelphia where his estate, Walnford, was located ; wills, including the certified copy of the will of Nicholas Waln in 1721/2 ; letters to Richard Waln ; documents, including the appointment of Thomas Wistar as Indian Commissioner by Presidents Andrew Johnson and Zachary Taylor and a photograph of Wistar with Sac, Fox and Kiowa Indians taken in ca. 1866 by Alexander Gardner.

Title: John Purslow petition to the Orphans' Court, Bucks County, Pennsylvania, 1690.

Purslow petitions the Orphans' Court to return the clothes of his stepson Henry Walmsley who had been a servant to Nicholas Waln since 1682. In it he declares that he has become the guardian of the children of his wife from her previous marriage, and requests that justice be done to one of her sons, "Henry," who was being kept as a servant (along with his clothing) by one of the justices of the Orphans' Court [actually a member of the Grand Jury]. The petition includes the list of this clothing.
