The Gideon Mayo papers begin with incoming correspondence, 1846-1876, primarily concerning financing and running the sawmills and other properties of Mayo and his business partners. Other letters deal with efforts to finance and build the Penobscot Railroad. The legal, financial, and company records sub-series give more detailed information about Mayo's various business ventures, especially his involvement in lumbering, sawmills, and railroads. The papers of Charles W. Mayo, Gideon Mayo's son, deal primarily with his activities as administrator of his father's estate, as well as personal and family matters. The papers of George H. Hamlin are a mix of personal and business records. His incoming correspondence, 1876-1912, includes information about forming the Alumni Association for the Maine State College, the promotion in 1896 of an engineering experiment station bill similar to the Hatch Act for agriculture, and letters concerning his involvement in lumbering activities.

The records of a logging company in Maine. Included are copies of the incorporation papers of 1846, financial papers of the company from 1903 to 1919, statements of tolls, minutes of meetings, correspondence, and tax papers. Included also are two copies of a document Telos Lake, from Report of Land Agent of Maine of 1841, printed by order of Senate of January 14, 1840. Included also is a map of the Upper St. John River; two copies of a newspaper clipping from the Bangor Daily News (Aug. 22, 1963) about the Telos Dam; a reprint of The Telos Cut, by Lore A. Rogers, from the May 1966 issue of The Northern Logger; a carbon copy of The Telos Cut, by Myron H. Avery (22, vii pages); The Telos Canal: a lumberman's canal near Moosehead Lake, Maine, which diverts the water from the Allagash to the Penobscot (dated 1928); and photographs of the Telos and Lock Dams taken on or about May 18, 1942.

A small collection of records concerning the Grand Lake Dam, in Township 6 Range 8 of Penobscot County, Maine. Included is a copy of Chapter 388, An Act to incorporate the Grand Lake Dam Company, approved by the State of Maine on August 7, 1846. Also included are 12 photographs of the Grand Lake Dam in 1942 with George H. Hamlin in some of the photographs taken by Paul F. Kruse, Chief Engineer at the Bangor Hydro-Electric Company.

Records of a tannery originally owned by F. Shaw and Brothers located in Grand Lake Stream, Maine. Included is a ledger recording bark received from 1880 to 1897. Included also are statements of business operations in Brookton, Maine from 1885 to 1894, several with the letterhead of Chas. W. Clement, Trustee, Business of F. Shaw & Bros. Included also are letters in 1904 concerning the Grand Lake Stream property. Correspondents include S. B. Gates, Fred E. Knapp, Chester W. Lyman, and George H. Hamlin.

Hamlin, George H. Papers, 1874-1911.

Title: Papers, 1874-1911.

The collection contains a diary maintained by George Hamlin in 1874 in which he made notes about his classes and his activities at the University of Maine. Also included is a volume of notes on velocity measured by Hamlin on the west branch of the Stillwater River in Orono and an undated volume listing the elevations of bench-marks found on various streets in Bangor, Maine. The final volume in the collection appears to have been used by Hamlin to record miscellaneous notes, including information about log drives in 1911. The volume also contains a detailed description of an unidentified mine.

Title: East Branch Dam Company and East Branch Improvement Company records, 1862-1966

Records of a company and its successor which owned a share of the power rights of the Penobscot River in Maine.The records of the East Branch Dam Company include a copy of the act of incorporation, a deed dated 1862 but never executed by David Pingree et al. to sell to the East Branch Dam Company all rights to the Webster Dam, several bills from 1907, and two diaries kept by workers on the East Branch dams. The first is by W. R. Goodwin in 1890 and the second is by F. H. Allen in 1901. Also included are records of the East Branch Improvement Company from 1903 to 1949. Included are bills, receipts and vouchers, annual reports from 1944 to 1949, scattered tax bills and receipts from 1907 to 1932, treasurer's financial statements from 1904 to 1936, minutes of meetings of stockholders and directors, correspondence, and 4 photographs of the Telos Canal.
