Title: Frank Manny papers 1890-1955

Progressive educator, student of Thomas Dewey at the University of Chicago, served as head of the state Normal School at Oshkosh, Wisconsin, superintendent of the Felix Adler School of Ethical Culture in New York City and as head of teacher education in the city of Baltimore. The papers include extensive personal correspondence, scrapbooks, journals, writings and other materials concerning his professional interests. Correspondence includes letters from distinguished authors and educators.

Title: Papers, 1810-1921.

Correspondence and professional papers of Walter Channing, psychiatrist and chairman of the board of trustees of the Boston State Hospital from 1908 to 1914. Among Channing's correspondents were numerous physicians, psychiatrists, and other professional men, including Harvey Humphrey Baker, Walter E. Fernald, Henry P. Frost, L. Vernon Briggs, Henry LeFavour, and Elmer E. Southard. Family correspondents include Channing's wife, Anna K. Morse Channing, and Thomas Wentworth Higginson, his uncle and guardian. (Con't) Channing opened a psychiatric hospital in Brookline, Mass., in 1879, and built a new Channing Sanitarium in nearby Wellesley in 1916. The collection includes drafts and typescripts of Channing's writings, including short stories and a pamphlet on Leon F. Czolgosz, assassin of President William McKinley. A letter from anarchist Emma Goldman concerning Czolgosz is included. Also included are scattered reports of the Boston State Hospital, diaries of Anna Channing (1868-1878), and diaries of Walter Channing (1904-21 and scattered earlier years). The collection contains some items from Channing's grandfather, Dr. Walter Channing (1786-1876): a journal of a trip to England (1810-12), and a notebook listing and commenting on midwifery cases (1811-22).

Eva Whiting White, social worker and educator, was involved in education.She was the first graduate of the Boston School for Social Workers (later Simmons College School of Social Work). She went on to become the head worker at the Elizabeth Peabody House (a settlement house in Boston's West End), Dean of the Simmons College School of Social Work, a member of the Boston Board of Public Welfare, Director of the Americanization and Immigration Division of the Massachusetts Board of Education and President of the Women's Educational and Industrial Union. The collection contains predominantly professional records including pamphlets, newspaper clippings, genealogies, photographs, financial records, histories, theater programs, post cards and correspondence. Correspondents include Jane Addams, Harriett M. Bartlett, Bancroft Beatley, Leonard Bernstein, Alice Channing, Eleanor Clifton, Ada Comstock, Richard K. The general Correspondence subseries contains material regarding Board of Trustee meetings, committee business, and requests for Garfield. Some correspondence contains discussion of the war effort and personal issues. Major correspondents include Henry Lefavour, Francis Lynde Stetson, Clark Williams, and Frederic T. Wood. The Alfred Clark Chapin subseries deals primarily with the building of Grace (now Chapin) Hall, donation of his rare books, and the opening of the Chapin Library. Much of the Bentley W. Warren subseries relates to issues before the Buildings & Grounds Committee--including construction of Grace Hall (1910), an addition to Lasell Gymnasium (1926), and the Physical Plant (1931)--and includes architects' proposals, blueprints, progress reports, etc. Additional correspondents include Alfred C. Chapin, Treasurer Willard Hoyt, and architects Cram, Goodhue and Ferguson. The Meetings and Committees subseries, comprising material relating to board and committee meetings, contains meeting announcements, agendas, minutes, statistics, etc.

Correspondence; diaries; reprints; laboratory manuals. The correspondence (bulk dates, 1901-1929) consists of family correspondence about student experiences at Clark University, experiences in France during World War I, and professional correspondence concerning recommendations and professional appointments. The diaries (1902-1917) are personal, reflecting his thoughts on his education and career. Reprints (1932-1954) by Hubbard concern trends in physics teaching, chemical physics, and acoustics; the laboratory manuals (1936-1951) are on the subjects of ultrasonics, optical studies, and basic laboratory physics. Correspondents include: A.L. Bonton, H.O. Jueser, Henry Lefavour, and Wallace C. Sabine.

The collection contains biographical and genealogical materials, published and unpublished writings, correspondence, clippings, notes, speeches and addresses, a scrapbook, and other papers of Brackett's. Most were used by his second wife, Louisa de Berniere Bacot Brackett, Rose W. Bull, and Katharine D. Hardwick for their biography : Jeffrey Richardson Brackett, Everyday Puritan (1956), including much material with annotations by the authors and copies of the biography. Personal papers include Brackett family papers; journal (1879) of George B. Morison, a fellow student of Brackett at Adams Academy, Quincy, Mass.; papers related to Brackett's position as lifetime chair of the Harvard University Class of 1883; and a 1728 deed to land owned by the Brackett family in Braintree, Mass. (now Quincy, Mass). Professional papers include material on Brackett's work with public charity organizations in Baltimore; the Boston School for Social Workers (later Simmons College School of Social Work); involvement with various charity and social work organizations including Massachusetts Civic League, Massachusetts Dept. of Public Welfare, Massachusetts General Hospital Social Service Dept., and National Conference of Social Work; and special subject files on poor law and customs and the scope and organization of charity, two life-long areas of interest.
