Title: Virginia Militia Order Book, 1770-1780.

Contains daily regimental orders, records of courts-martial, extracts of orders, 1775-1780, from Generals Muhlenberg and von Steuben and from Governor Thomas Jefferson (December 1780); and a copy of an intercepted letter, 4 November 1780, to Cornwallis from General Leslie re: military matters. The entries were made mostly by Lieutenant Joseph Jones while the Dinwiddie militia was in the vicinity of Williamsburg, Va. Also contains miscellaneous accounts; a memoranda, 1770, about gardening; and accounts, 1779, of Peter Smith, mulatto.

Title: Alexander Leslie letterbooks 1781-1782

Alexander Leslie (ca. 1740-1794) was an officer in the British Army. Collection consists of correspondence and documents (some transcripts) pertaining to the British Army command at Charleston, South Carolina, during the American revolution. Bulk of the correspondence is letters from General Leslie and Colonel Nisbet Balfour (commandant of Charleston under Cornwallis). Documents include military warrants, accounts, orders, and reports.

The Henry Clinton papers contain the correspondence, records, and maps of Henry Clinton, who served under Thomas Gage and William Howe between 1775 and 1778, and was commander-in-chief of the British forces in North America from 1778 to 1782. Although the bulk of the papers cover his tenure as commander-in-chief, with particular attention to engagements in New York and New Jersey and the sieges of Charleston and Yorktown, they also document Clinton's efforts to restore his reputation after the war, and to some extent, his personal life. Title: LS, 1781 December 19 : Charles Town, to Lieut. Colonel Hamilton.

Hamilton is "Directed to proceed with a Flag of Truce to the Head Quarters of Major General Greene, in order to Transact Business with him, from thence to return to this Fort Unmolested." Greene was camped at Round O west of Charleston. The British were now confined to Charleston and Savannah.
