Consists primarily of the correspondence of Wyndham Robertson. Letters written before the Civil War concern his experiences as a student at the College of William and Mary, family news, Southern ante-bellum society, his estate at Abingdon, Va., and land speculation in Arkansas. Wartime letters concern the election of 1860, the secession crisis, and the effect of the war on Robertson's family. Postwar letters discuss Robertson's business interest in the Buena Vista Plaster Company, Virginia history, and his book Descendants of Pocahontas (1858?). Also, contain papers of the Loyal Company of Virginia including land surveys, receipts, land grants, and account books for land purchased in Virginia (reels 6 and 7); Roster of Officers and Members of R.E. Lee Camp No. 1, 1913 (reel 5); letters, 1823-1872, of John Robertson concerning national politics and life in Washington, D.C. (reel 6); account books, 1849 and 1851, of Wyndham Robertson (reel 7); notes on the Robertson family (reel 7); commonplace book, 1780-1821, of William Robertson containing lines of verse (reel 7); diary, 1771, of William Robertson kept in England and Scotland (reel 7); correspondence and will of Francis Smith (of Washington County, Va.) The John L. Heatwole Collection, 1802-1901, consists of three folders containing 102 items pertaining to Shenandoah Valley history. The collection is arranged into three series: General Valley Documents, Page County Documents, and Recipes. Series I, General Valley Documents, 1802-1901, includes arrest warrants, summonses, orders for the seizure of goods for non-payment of debt, legal receipts, tax receipts, and business letterheads. Individual items are chronologically arranged and described to the item level as per the donor's explanatory notes. Documents related to the Zigler Family of Timberville have been placed at the front of the folder and consist of five receipts of muster fines and orders granting private entertainment to John or David Zigler, 1828-1850. Series II, Page County Documents, 1854-1879, contains various court documents summonses, treasury receipts, handwritten receipts, and orders for the seizure of goods for non-payment of debt. Individual items are arranged chronologically. Series III, Recipes, consists of two handwritten and two printed recipes for herbal cures and a recipe for making gunpowder. One recipe, printed in Pennsylvania Dutch or a variation of German, gives steps for curing a "mad dog bite" (i.e. rabies). A second recipe, also written in Pennsylvania Dutch, describes an incantation against sties. For complete translations see John L. The record offers the names of person sending students, age and name of student, and attendence for May 1, 1854-Aug. 26, 1854.

Hart, John,. Collection of Confederate letters and receipts, 1860-1868.

Title: Collection of Confederate letters and receipts, 1860-1868.

The bulk of the collection contains letters, petitions, and affidavits concerning the desertion of Timothy T. White from the Confederate Army, his subsequent arrest for selling free blacks as slaves and possession of counterfeit money, the claim by C.Y. Savage for the return of his money paid to White for the slaves, and the judge's ruling for White's heirs after his death in 1864 (9 items). Correspondents in this case include V.A. Haynes, James A. Cross, F.H. Cobb, Alexander Donnan, Samuel Gibbs French, William Robertson, Judge W.T. Joynes, E.B. Branch, John H. Gayle, and David May. A second group of papers in this collection consist of receipts to Dr. J.C. Bragg, Amelia County, for coal, hogs, and bacon supplied to the Confederate Army; receipts for payment of his taxes with corn, wheat, molasses, potatoes, peas and beans; and a receipt from J.R. Anderson and Co. for delivery of iron to Dr. J.C. Bragg. There are two receipts to the estate of W.A. Bragg for payment of taxes with corn. A third group contains a certificate for bonds issued to Green Hill and receipts to his estate paid by David May for land taxes in Dinwiddie County. Three warrants on the treasury of the Confederate States were issued to M.E. Price by James G. Paxton, Lynchburg. John P. May received a letter in 1860 from the Ames Manufacturing Company concerning the price and availability of swords. John Gibson wrote to David May in 1861 about a runaway slave, Susan. David May wrote to John J. Blackstone enclosing a memorandum from Richard Henry Baker, Jr. about the estate of General T.H. Bayly at Mt. Custis. May was chosen in 1866 to represent Petersburg for the Freedman's Bureau. Three certificates for bonds, plus subsequent assignments, were issued to B.B. Arnold, Baughman and Richards, and A.W. Daley in 1864. In 1868, William Moore wrote to General Henry A. Wise requesting information about collecting a bill from Mrs. Perkins' agents.
