Frank Eugene Austin was born June 12, 1873, in Amesbury, Mass. He graduated from Dartmouth College in 1895. In 1896, he, Prof. Edwin Frost, and Dr. Gilman Frost took the first x-ray photograph of the human body when they x-rayed the hand of a boy who had fallen while ice skating. In 1901 Austin was hired as a professor of electrical engineering by the Thayer School of Engineering at Dartmouth, from which he retired in 1921. Following retirement he established The Austin Workshop where children worked with tools and where he developed a variety of gadgets and toys. Out of his work with children came the idea for an ant farm which was developed in 1931 and became a commercial success. Prof. Austin was also the author of several books on engineering and was an inventor. He died in Florida at the age of 91 in 1964.

Collection consists of the records of the Thayer School of Engineering. Includes correspondence, dated 1867-1871, among Sylvanus Thayer, Asa Dodge Smith, D. H. Mahan, Robert Fletcher, Elihu Thayer Quimby, and others regarding the inception and organization of the school. Includes correspondence, reports, and other papers regarding many of the school's concerns, such as Thayer's original intentions and expectations for the school; the inadequacy of its funds, facilities, and equipment during its early years; the role of Dartmouth College in its finances and administration; the undergraduate engineering sciences department at Dartmouth College; the Tuck-Thayer program; and the induction of students into the Civil Engineer Corps of the U.S. Navy and other branches of the service during World War II. Some of the material was generated by the Thayer School of Engineering Board of Overseers and directed to the president and the trustees of Dartmouth College. Also includes papers of Robert Fletcher and William Phelps Kimball, volumes 1-11 of the West Point-Thayer Papers, 1808-1872 (West Point, N.Y. : Association of Graduates, 1965), faculty meeting reports, curriculum studies reports, student records, and general correspondence.
