Title: Hughston papers, ca. 1861-1969.

Summary: Manuscripts, research, pamphlets and brochures, and photographs of Mary Hughston and her interests as well as a postcard collection belonging to her mother Florence C. Hughston. Personal papers include materials from her education and her work as a teacher in Tucson. A large portion of the manuscript materials consist of essays Mary wrote for publications many dealing with Tucson history. A large manuscript is present along with extensive notes dealing with the life and career of Albert Steinfeld includes his memoirs as dictated by Steinfeld to Ms. Hughston. There are also two recollections by John Spring, 1910, Additional manuscripts deal with the Consolidated National Bank of Tucson and a number of prominent men in its organization. As a lover of Arizona history Mary Hughston collected a large number of tourism pamphlets and brochures of points of interest in Arizona and Tucson including some for private schools, the Sunshine Climate Club, Rancho Linda Vista, Arizona Desert School, Evans School, Fresnal Ranch School, Potter School, Stone Ashley home, Harold Bell Wright home, Desert Laboratory, Old Pueblo Club, and Saguaro National Monument. Many of these have been preserved in the collection. Photographs show Mary Hughston, Tucson street scenes, animals, and her aerial buying trip for Steinfelds in 1929 by airplane. On early photo album includes cartes-de-visite of Civil War generals. Postcards include images of Benson's railroad depot, Main Street businesses, and school; and Cananea and Guaymas, Mexico.

Summary: Business records of the L. Zeckendorf and Albert Steinfeld companies including correspondence, tax returns, bank statements, trust documents, property listings, business ledgers, architectural drawings, and financial reports but primarily business ledgers of various companies owned by or affialiated with Albert Steinfeld from 1894 to 1971. No personal correspondence or photographs are present in this collection. The only personal papers are financial in nature. Records of the Steinfeld Company include articles of incorporation, agreements, financial ledgers, legal documents, etc. Additional companies including investment and real estate ventures include financial documents for the Highland Park Realty Company, Suburban Improvement Company, Casa Grande Commercial Company, Chain Sanitary Grocery Company, Tucson Iron Works, Tucson Pressed Brick Company, and the Arizona Broadcasting Company, and others. There are financial ledgers for L. Zeckdorf & Co. from 1874 to 1906; early ledgers include supplies, purchase, dry goods and grocery listings. Other highlights include architectural drawings, mostly dated 1946 to 1970, for downtown buildings and El Con Mall including the Steinfeld's Warehouse, an Immigration Service building, and the new store in El Con Mall. Also present is one financial ledger, 1941-1944, for the El Conquistador Hotel; scattered payroll ledgers listing employees and pay rates, from the Steinfeld stores, 1908-1963; and a ledger for sales of explosives, 1917-1919.

Legal materials relate to Ives' cases including Zeckendorf vs. Steinfeld, Steinfeld vs. Wong, and cases involving the Santa Cruz Reservoir Co., Arizona Eastern Railroad, Dr. George Goodfellow, Ralph Cameron, and the divorce of Charles and Eva Lummis. Prominent correspondents include George W.P. Hunt, Albert Steinfeld, Mulford Winsor, William C. Greene, Epes Randolph, and Louis Zeckendorf.

Legal documents, correspondence and manuscripts, mostly pertaining to mining claims, irrigation disputes and contract litigation. Most of the cases were instigated by, or brought against, Albert Steinfeld and involve disputes over the acquisition of Silver Bell Mining Company stock, Nielsen Mining Company stock, and a loan contract relating to a Yuma power plant. There is also a 1937 statement and correspondence about the proposed presidential changes to the United States Supreme Court.

Scattered court records from the Arizona Supreme Court, First Judicial Court, County Superior Court, Probate Court, Justice of the Peace court, and the Pima County jail, 1867-1945. There are transcripts, exhibits, court calendars, bail notes and warrants. Jail records include ledgers listing county prisoners, registers of meals and guard schedules, and constable fee books, 1880s to 1890s. Also present are two ledgers for U.S. prisoners confined in the County Jail, 1885-1904 and one ledger of wanted posters. Justice of the Peace records include eleven boxes of death inquests, 1885-1945, by last name. One ledger from the Helvetia Justice of the Peace is present, 1900-1911. Other court cases involve Eva Dugan, Louis Zeckendorf, Albert Steinfeld, Teodoro Elias, Frank Stillwell, Washington Jacobs, Colin Cameron, various Chinese and Mexican American residents, and others. Case exhibits include records of various mining companys, banks, and railroads. There are company records for the Old Glory Mining and Milling Company, . There are photographs of a 1922 train wreck and a 1906 flooding in Tucson. Maps relating to a 1918 dispute over ownership of Baca Float #3 land grant area also present.

The bulk of the collection is legal papers and financial records relating to mining companies, cattle companies, land grants, railroads, public utilities, banks, bankruptcies, estates, and property, mostly in Arizona. Similar material is also present from William Herring, an attorney, and Franklin's father-in-law; also, a smaller amount from Merrill P. Freeman, Tucson Postmaster and associate with Franklin in various enterprises. Among the many groups represented are Copper Queen Consolidated Mining Co., Detroit Copper Mining Co., Mammoth-Collins Gold Mines Ltd., Mammoth Cyanide Co., Seventy-nine Mining Co., South San Xavier Copper Co., San Rafael Cattle Co., "Y" Cattle Co., El Paso and Southwestern Railroad Co., and Zeckendorf family. An index to the hundreds of personal and corporate names, and also subjects, is present in the inventory. Franklin's family correspondence includes material from his uncle Lionel Mark Jacobs, a Tucson banker, whose estate papers are also present. Franklin's professional correspondence details activities in business investments, politics, Arizona State Bar, and University of Arizona. Major correspondents are Albert Steinfeld and H.W. Blaisdell.
