Hughston, Caroline Mary
Biographical note: Caroline Mary Hughston, known as Mary, was born in 1881 in Pennsylvania. She came to Tucson in 1903 and started teaching school at Amphitheater School. Later she worked with Consolidated National Bank and Steinfeld Department Store. In 1940 she opened her own business selling specialty items for women. Throughout her life she wrote many articles and papers dealing with aspects of Arizona and Tucson. She died August 24, 1970.

Biographical note: Caroline Mary Hughston came to Tucson with her mother in 1903. In that year, she passed her teaching exam and began work at Amphitheater School. She later became the first woman to be employed by the Consolidated National Bank of Tucson with Albert Steinfeld as president. Moving to Steinfeld's Department Store, she worked as the advertising manager and personally brought the first load of merchandise to Tucson from Los Angeles by air express. In 1940, she left Steinfeld's and opened a specialty shop for women which was called Mary Hughston's Petite Maison, . She maintained this business for 27 years until her retirement at the age of 86. Throughout her life Mary Hughston wrote many articles and papers dealing with aspects of Arizona history and featuring individuals in Tucson.
