Title: Downtown Brooklyn Development Association records 1929-1971

This collection comprises the subject files of the Downtown Brooklyn Development Association. The association was founded in 1929 as a civic group concerned with the problems of the business and shopping center in downtown Brooklyn. The papers are news clippings, correspondence, brochures, newsletters, pamphlets, legislative documents, photographs, city plans and maps, and other items relating to organizations and causes with which the association was involved. The majority of the documents were produced by external bodies or individuals but were integral the association's activities. The three subjects most comprehensively addressed are the development of the Brooklyn Civic Center (Cadman Plaza), the redevelopment of Fulton Street, and traffic and transportation.

Title: Brooklyn Public Library publications 1898-1965

The Brooklyn Public Library (BPL) publications span the years 1898 to 1965 and are housed in six and one half manuscript boxes. Materials represented in the collection include annual reports; bulletins; newsletters; book lists (bibliographies); and miscellaneous programs, publications, and ephemera. The formation of the Brooklyn Public Library (BPL) system was approved by the New York State legislature in 1892 and was officially organized in 1897. As of 2010, the BPL system consisted of 60 locations including the Central Library, the Business Library, and 58 branch libraries located throughout Brooklyn.

Scrapbook of Brooklyn Daily Eagle clippings about history and events happening in and around Brooklyn. The clippings are from the late 30s, but some of the articles cover older events. A wide range of topics are covered and there does not appear to be a common theme other than Brooklyn. Some of the clippings include information on Dutch landmarks, American Revolution, George Washington, Brooklyn bridge, farming, Bronx Zoo, doll collecting, opening of Brooklyn College, Floyd Bennett Field and the death of Amelia Earhart.

Alanson T. Briggs (1871-1946) served as Agent for Carnegie Sites of The New York Public Library from 1901-1910. He assisted the Board of Trustees in selecting sites for branch libraries, appraised them in conjunction with the Board of Appraisors, and negotiated their purchase for the Carnegie program. During this period he also served as Agent for the Carnegie programs in Queens and Brooklyn.

Collection consists of letter books and correspondence; typescript, handwritten and printed reports and memoranda; statistical tables and graphs; appraisals; blueprints; deed; insurance policies; photographs; sketches; clippings; petitions; and invitations to branch openings. While most of the material pertains to the N.Y.P.L. Carnegie branches, this collection also contains materials on other topics of interest. In addition to information on Carnegie branches in Brooklyn and Queens, there are reports and memoranda, tables and graphs, statistics and budgets relating to these two library systems, as well as to the N.Y.P.L. The collection also contains a transcript of New York Library laws; memoranda on the history of the New York, Brooklyn and Queens public libraries; and material relating to a conflict between the libraries and the Bookbinders' Union, to the sale of the Lenox Library, and to the 42nd Street Building. Of particular interest are the photographs of the Carnegie sites under construction.

Twenty-eight scrapbooks, 1900-1962, contain newspaper clippings about all aspects of the Brooklyn Public Library and its branches including events, classes, programs sponsored by the library, gifts to the library, and activities of library staff. Two scrapbooks, 1900-1901 and 1937-1956, labelled "Ingersoll Building" contain clippings documenting the construction of the Ingersoll (Central) Building. Ten scrapbooks, 1949-1971, include newsletters, clipping, photos, brochures, news releases; announcements about activities of the library include National Library Week, 1962-1963; the Lost Book Campaign, 1963; the Consumer's Education Series, 1962; Adult, Youth, and Children's Services, 1951-1960; and Branch Activities, 1949-1961. Also one scrapbook which includes the Brooklyn Public Library newsletter, September 1957-October 1960, produced by the Chief Librarian's office, and containing news of the library. Three cubic feet of scrapbooks and scrapbook pages, 1949-1977, contain mostly clippings; also some booklists, photos, brochures, and announcements documenting library activities.

Collection consists of correspondence that chronicles the creation in New York City of a branch circulating library system. Bulk of the collection is letters, 1901-1912, to Andrew Carnegie from John Shaw Billings, Director of the New York Public Library, and concerns the nature of circulating libraries and their potential educational importance. Remaining correspondence deals with the role of the Carnegie Corporation in the evolution of the branch systems of the New York Public Library, the Brooklyn Public Library and the Queensborough Public Library.
