John Gordon Garrard (1934-) is Professor Emeritus of Russian Studies at the University of Arizona. He previously taught at Carleton University, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, as a lecturer in Russian language and literature, 1958-62; Dartmouth College, Hanover, NH, as an assistant professor, 1964-69, and then associate professor of Russian literature, 1969-71; University of Virginia, Charlottesville, as professor of Russian literature, 1971-84, chair of the department of Slavic languages and literature, 1971-76, director of the Center for Russian and East European Studies, 1972-83; and finally University of Arizona, Tucson, as professor of Russian literature, 1984-, director of the Institute for the Study of the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe, 1985-87, and head of the department of Russian and Slavic languages, 1985-88. He was also at Indiana University, Bloomington, as a visiting associate professor, 1970-71. He published the following works, many of which were co-written by Carol Garrard, his wife: Mixhail Chulkov: An Introduction to His Prose and Verse, 1970; Mikhail Lermontov, 1982; (with Carol Garrard) Inside the Soviet Writers' Union, 1990; and (with Carol Garrard) The Bones of Berdichev: The Life and Fate of Vasily Grossman, 1996.
