Title:
University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Photographic Laboratory collection, 1946-1990
The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Photographic Laboratory served the University community for almost half a century, from 1946 to 1990. The Laboratory processed (developed) film for University photographers and served as the image reproduction center for University offices, schools, departments, staff, and student activities. Thousands of the images in this collection appeared in a variety of University-related publications (including the Yackety Yack and The Daily Tarheel) in addition to being used in official materials created to provide information about different departments, schools, and departments on campus. The Photographic Laboratory ceased operations in 1990. The majority of the collection consists of black-and-white photographic negatives and mounted "reference" photographic prints created by the Photographic Laboratory between 1946 and 1990. Subject matter includes faculty, staff, students, facilities, and activities at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Title:
Newspaper clippings (1965-1966) on the tenure of Paul Dickson as UNC student body president / copied and organized by Elizabeth B. DeBold. 2011.
Paul Dickson III was elected the student body president at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in spring 1965. He was asked to resign after breaking the campus honor code by bringing a woman student into his fraternity house, but refused to resign despite a petition signed by almost 2,000 students. The case led to a reconsideration of dual policies for men and women students, since the woman involved was suspended and Dickson was not. Later, Dickson was involved with another controversy with his fight against North Carolina's Speaker Ban Law.

Lauterer, Jock. Jock Lauterer photographic collection, circa 1964-1968.
Title:
Jock Lauterer photographic collection, circa 1964-1968.
The collection is predominantly composed of images of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the town of Chapel Hill, N.C., made from circa 1964-1968, when the photographer was an undergraduate student at UNC. The largest grouping of negatives documents the UNC Men's Glee Club European Tour of 1966. Other images portray life in Chapel Hill, the UNC campus, and university activities. Lauterer captured small-town life; the serenity of campus; sporting events; and the effects of politically charged times on a small community, including anti-war protests, Speaker Ban protests, civil rights marches and speeches, and a Ku Klux Klan rally. Many of the images include persons of national or local significance.

Many items relate to the University of North Carolina and address general planning issues, medical and veterinary school planning, the sale of public utilities in the 1970s, the Speaker Ban debate of the mid-1960s, consolidation, and other issues faced by the boards of trustees and of governors. There is also information about North Carolina Governor Luther Hodges, professional organizations and businesses with which Hill was affiliated, Hill's Guernsey cattle operation and home at Quail Roost Farm, and Hill's service in the Office of Strategic Services during World War II. Audiovisual materials relate to George Watts Hill, the Hill family, and Durham. There are some family photographs, including one of John sprunt Hill taken in Puerto Rico in 1898. Many photographs were taken by George Watts Hill while a student at the University of North Carolina, 1918-1924, and apparently as a photographer for Yackety Yack, the campus yearbook; they document athletic events, student organizations, campus buildings and athletic fields, and other aspects of campus life. Other photographs appear to have been taken in Europe where Hill traveled in 1922 and 1924. There are also later photographs, including aerial photographs of Durham and the Research Triangle Park area.

Title:
McNeill Smith Papers, 1937-1999
John McNeill Smith Jr. (1918-2011), a white attorney, state legislator, and teacher, practiced law in Greensboro, N.C. He was attorney for University of North Carolina students in the Speaker Ban case in 1963; co-counsel, 1958-1962, for Junius Irving Scales, a Communist Party member charged with advocating violent overthrow of the government; and negotiator during the 1960 lunch counter sit-in in Greensboro. Smith served as state representative and then senator, 1971-1978. After an unsuccessful campaign for the United States Senate in 1978, he continued to practice law and taught constitutional law at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The papers, 1937-1999, of McNeill Smith document his career as a lawyer and as a North Carolina state legislator. Political papers, which make up the bulk of the collection, include materials relating to Smith's tenure in the North Carolina legislature, political campaigns, and other political activities. Many of these items relate to environmental legislation, education, and tax reform. Law firm materials include papers relating to Smith's activities in civil rights, the 1963 Speaker Ban Law case, and academic freedom and freedom of speech in general, but there are only a small number of items about his defense of Junius Irving Scales. There are also materials relating to Smith's participation in professional organizations, including the American Bar Association, the North Carolina Bar Association, and the North Carolina Advisory Committee to the United States Commission on Civil Rights, and in civic and religious organizations, especially the Greensboro Chamber of Commerce and the Methodist Church. Also included are writings; items relating to his helping Estonia in its legal preparations for self-governance after the break-up of the Soviet Union; World War II materials relating to Smith's service in the United States Navy as a bomb disposal officer; papers from Robeson County, N.C., schools and the University of North Carolina documenting school life and alumni activities; and personal papers, including family correspondence and financial materials.
