Day, Sargent S. Austerlitz, N. B. Palmer, Shooting Star, Washington Allston, and unidentified ship logbooks, 1835-1854.

These two logbooks were kept by Sargent S. Day on board numerous ships. One volume contains entries made from May 27, 1835-November 28, 1838 aboard an unidentified ship on voyages between Boston; Hobart, Tasmania; and Sydney, New South Wales in 1835-1836 and a voyage from Boston to St. Joseph, Florida, in November 1838. The other volume is a logbook kept on board the ships Austerlitz, N. B. Palmer, Shooting Star, and Washington Allston between 1851 and 1854. Entries were made on a voyage from San Francisco to Calcutta aboard the Austerlitz, in September -November 1851. That ship was abandoned and the crew was taken on board the N. B. Palmer, bound for Shanghai. This logbook also contains entries made from December 23, 1851- March 17, 1852 aboard the Shooting Star, whose shipmaster was Judah P. Baker, on a voyage from Canton to Boston. and aboard the Washington Allston, of which Sargent S. Day was shipmaster, from Boston to San Francisco, Singapore, Penang, Calcutta, and back to Boston, from September 1, 1852-January 14, 1854.

Correspondence, account books, and other papers of a Boston merchant engaged in trade in Hawaii and other Pacific islands. Although the bulk of the collection relates to James Hunnewell, there are business papers of James F. Hunnewell, Charles Brewer, and Henry A. Peirce. There are letters from a number of missionaries, including a few native ones. There are extensive ship papers and a dozen logbooks; ships represented by the most material include the Eliza Warwick, John Gilpin, Polynesia, Syren, and Washington Allston. There are papers relating to the Kansas Aid Fund (the Middlesex County Committee for) and the Sailors' Home Society, of Honolulu.

Collection contains typed summaries of whaling logbooks transcribed by Morton R. Lovett. Transcripts provide name of ship; rigging; tonnage; port of origin; name of master and logkeeper, if known; owner(s) of ship; and summary of the journal kept for the whaling voyage. Location of original log is also provided; most of the originals are located in the Phillips Library - a few may be found in the Beverly Historical Society, Beverly, Massachusetts.
