Jerry Bywaters was a printmaker working in Texas, and associated with the Lone Star Printmakers. This correspondence rests on Bywaters' prints and Zigrosser's interest in the magazine Southwestern Arts and in Texas printmakers. Included is a long letter from 1940 in which Bywaters tries to characterize Texas art for Zigrosser, the letter concludes with a biographical statement by Bywaters. Bywaters also read the Texas portion of Zigrosser's book, The Artist in America, and offered suggestions on the text. The book was then excerpted in Southwest Review.

The papers document Bywaters' career as a painter and art historian through a resume, interviews, and other professional activity material; artist files consisting of interviews, resumes, clippings, and photographs of works for various artists; and exhibition announcements, catalogs, and other printed material. Professional activity consists of a resume, an interview with Maria Redelsperger, two interviews which are mostly an account of Bywaters' life than actual interviews, and photographs of Bywaters and his artwork.Artist files consist of files on various artists Bywaters researched during his career. Materials include resumes, clippings, exhibition announcements and catalogs, interviews, and photographs of the artists or some of their works. Also included are two oral interviews with architect John Staub and Nina Cullinan who was associated with the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. Bywaters did not conduct these interviews.Printed material consists of exhibition announcements, exhibition catalogs, and the article, "Art Museums: Repositories, or Creative Centers?" written by Bywaters.

Zigrosser was also asked to make suggestions for the Society's annual purchase fund. He responded with a thoughtful list outlining a course of future acquisitions. Letters from Jerry and Mary Bywaters arranged for Zigrosser to visit Dallas in 1943, jury and exhibition and deliver a lecture there. The correspondence for 1968 is part of Zigrosser's research on John Marin.
