Correspondence by and about Bishop Littlejohn, chiefly with Bishop William Rollinson Whittingham. Early papers include Littlejohn's reasons for declining a call to St. Paul's Parish, Baltimore, 1855; his work in St. Paul's Church, New Haven, Conn.; his support for the Freedmans' Commission, 1865; and election as Bishop of the newly-created Diocese of Long Island, 1863. Among many subjects are Littlejohn's veneration for Whittingham and what he learned from Whittingham; affairs of the General Theological Seminary in New York City; powers of the House of Bishops; the ordination of women as deaconesses; and many clergy matters of the Diocese of Long Island. There are also materials on relations with the Church of England, including a reply to a communication from the Bishop of Winchester, 1871, and Littlejohn's opinion of Archibald Campell Tait, Archbishop of Canterbury, 1876; relations with the Orthodox Churches; and the work of the Mexican Commission of the House of Bishops in the 1870s.

The papers contain manuscripts, correspondence, diaries, scrapbooks, notebooks, and journals of Mrs. Smith, her husband, Seba Smith, and of their sons, Appleton Oaksmith, Sidney Oaksmith, Alvin Oaksmith and Edward Oaksmith. The literary papers include Seba Smith's column on Major Jack Downing and Solomon Swope, and reviews of his "New elements of geometry"; drafts and copies of numerous poems, short stories, essays and lectures by Mrs. Smith as well as manuscripts of her plays "Destiny," "Roman tribute," and "Old New York," sermons, 1877, from her pastorate of the Independent Church, Canastota, N.Y.; Edward Oaksmith's translations of Moliere's "Miser"; and manuscripts and clippings of poems and short stories by Seba, the sons and granddaughters. Letters and diaries discuss the publication of the Jack Downing letters and criticism of the geometry; Mrs. Smith's literary career and lecture tours; her efforts to vindicate Appleton from charges of slave trading brought by William H. Seward, Appleton's divorce from his first wife and the drowning of his four daughters in an 1879 North Carolina boating acident; the diplomatic careers of Appleton and Sidney in Nicaragua, Haiti, and Panama; Edward's religious meditations, conversion to Catholicism and Jesuit novitiate in France; Sidney's law practice and death at sea in 1869; and efforts of Mrs. Smith and her daughter-in-law Delfina Oaksmith to run boarding houses. Other topics inclue the "thermolume" cure, New England literary figures, current events, spiritualism, abolition, Mrs. Smith's interviews with Thurlow Weed and Andrew Johnson on behalf of Appleton, her campaign in behalf of a condemned woman, and her controversy with P. T. Barnum over unauthorized use of her name; and descriptions of life in Portland, Maine, New Mexico in 1885, and Lettsburg, Northumberland County, Va., 1884-1892. Of special interest is her eyewitness account of the 1863 New York City draft riot. The collection also contains a youthful diary, 1871-1873, of Elizabeth Oaksmith, photographs, and scrapbooks compiled by Augusta Oaksmith containing clippings re the family and their literary output. Williams, J. (John), 1817-1899. John Williams papers, 1843-1880.

Title: John Williams papers, 1843-1880.

These papers consist chiefly of intimate and wide-ranging correspondence with Bishop William Rollinson Whittingham. Only four items date before 1851, when Williams became Bishop Coadjutor of Connecticut. They praise Whittingham's sermon on the priesthood of 1843, which caused controversy in the Diocese of Maryland, and minor matters. Papers of Williams's episcopate include much material on affairs of the Diocese of Connecticut, the General Conventions, and issues confronting the Church. Much concerns relations with the Roman Catholic and Congregational Churches, and especially with the Church of England, including negotiations about Lambeth Conferences, doubts that the Church should attend the Conference of 1877, correspondence with British bishops, particularly the Bishops of Winchester and Edinburgh, questions of vesting the patriarchate in the Archbishop of Canterbury, 1874, and attitudes towards Archbishop Tait. Letters of the Reverend A. Cleveland Coxe comment on Williams's character and abilities. The Bishop's letters frequently express admiration and friendship for Whittingham, consulting him on many matters of policy and administration, such as business of the House of Bishops, efforts of the House of Clerical and Lay Deputies to reduce the authority of bishops, canons against ritual, requirements for theological studies, etc. Letters of the Civil War period support Whittingham's controversial stand for the Union in Maryland; consult him on the legality of Bishop Henry C. Lay's resignation of part of his jurisdiction, 1861; mention Bishop Thomas Atkinson's communication of 1862 as a ray of light; discuss resignation of rectors in Washington, D.C., 1862; and oppose drafting clergymen for military duty, 1865. Williams's Civil War prayers are also included. Later letters deal with expansion of the Episcopal Church in the western states, praise Bishop John B. Kerfoot, support the Freedmans' Commission, 1865-1868, and urge Whittingham to write a Pastoral Letter from the Bishops to the Episcopal Church at large, 1868. There is also material concerning the Diocese of New York, 1869; the conduct and schism of Bishop George D. Cummins, 1869-1875; Williams's controversy with Ewer, 1870; work of the Committee on Theological Studies of the House of Bishops, 1871; Williams's opposition to the Society of St. John the Evangelist (Cowley Fathers) 1871-1872; High and Low Church controversies; Williams's strenuous visitations of 1873, with ninety-seven services in ninety-one days; and affairs of the Dioceses of Illinois, Wisconsin, Fond du Lac, Kentucky, and Iowa. Substantial material concerns Williams's relations with many bishops, including Levi S. Ives, Charles C. Penick, Abram N. Littlejohn, and William C. Doane, as well as many other clergymen, among them James De Koven.
