Title: Henry Cruger & Company account book 1784-1793

Henry Cruger was born in New York in 1739 and educated at Kings College (now Columbia University). He became active in his family's mercantile business in Bristol, England, and gained prominence both in New York and England. In 1765, he was elected to the Bristol Common Council, a position he held until 1790. He served as Sheriff of Bristol from 1766 to 1767, and was elected to Parliament as a radical Whig in 1774. His outspoken support for American independence led to his defeat in the election of 1780, but did not end his political career; he went on to become mayor of Bristol in 1781, and was reelected to Parliament in 1784. Their findings verified the election of George Clinton and Pierre Van Cortlandt as Governor and Lieutenant Governor and the election of Henry Cruger, John Schenck, Selah Strong, Joseph Hasbrouck, John Frey, Robert Woodworth, and John Livingston as Senators. Report is signed by Melancton Smith, Daniel Graham, Pierre Van Cortlandt, Jr., David McCarthy, Jonathan N. Havens, David Gelston, and Thomas.

Papers, 1728-1893 (bulk ca. 1784 - ca. 1826). They include correspondence, bonds, indentures, bills of sale (including some for ships), vouchers, receipts, powers of attorney, other legal and financial papers, and a few miscellaneous pieces of printed ephemera, such as prices current at Livorno and New Orleans, and a blank form for a bill of exchange. Most of the material consists of letters from merchants and business associates in New York City, Philadelphia, and elsewhere, about the settlement of accounts, trade, land speculation, introductions, and personal matters. Individual correspondents include Samuel Ogden and other members of the Ogden family; Peter Collins; Nicholas and Henry Cruger; Josiah Hardy and James Rivington, Jr.; John Wilcocks; and Thomas Lawrence and Jacob Morris. Subjects include Low's mercantile activities, especially the import of Madeira wine; his purchases of land in upstate New York and Canada, some in partnership with Samuel Ogden; the closing of the firm of Lawrence & Morris; and occasional references to politics and personal affairs. A 1788 letter from Peter Collins alludes to Low's work as a member of the state constitutional convention. A letter from Samuel Ogden discusses financial issues arising from his use of the labor of slaves belonging to Low's brother Isaac. A letter from John Smithson to a correspondent named Irwin, written in 1807, includes a detailed discussion of how to deal with having had a vessel seized, apparently passing on advice from Low's business partner Wallace. Personal material includes a letter from his daughter, Henrietta Low, and some invoices for her schooling and other expenses. Later material includes letters, telegrams, and miscellaneous papers, some pertaining to Augustus Fleming, others members of the Beekman family.

Aaron Lopez (1731-1782) was a Jew of the Converso (converted) community of Portugal. In order to freely practice Judaism, he and his family left Portugal and relocated to British North America settling in Newport, Rhode Island and later, Massachusetts. He began a successful mercantile business and eventually became a key supplier of the American revolutionary forces. The collection contains numerous shipping records along with correspondence and accounts with merchants, mercantile families and firms including Henry Lloyd of Boston, Henry Cruger of Bristol, George Hayley of London, William Stead of Sheffield and New Bedford whaler Joseph Rotch. The collection contains manifests, mercantile accounts, notations, correspondence and inventories of estates for several ofthe children of Aaron Lopez.

Journal of Phineas Baldwin and Reuben Webster documents the activities of two men in Litchfield, Conn. Baldwin traded in a variety of commodities and services with Litchfield residents, such as wood, veal, rice, tobacco, butter, and carting. His sections of the book run from 1784 to 1806. Another person, perhaps Reuben Webster, also used the book. These sections (1817 through 1829) contain entries regarding Baldwin's estate, the writer's personal affairs, such as taxes, medicinal recipes, and apple trees purchased, and include notations from 1823-1824 recording activities relating to official Litchfield town business, such as writing letters to selectmen of other towns, payments for arbitration and other services, bridge repair and inspection, inspection of property lines, and the like. The journal also contains accounts of washing performed in 1822 for Jacob Baker and Henry Cruger, two Litchfield Law School students.

Title: Letter book and waste book, 1762-1768.

Letter book (June 1766-Aug. 1767) of Henry and John Cruger contains copies of their business correspondence with merchants and firms in Europe, the West Indies, and elsewhere (130 p.). Entries relate to thier import and export trade, trade conditions, and instructions to shipmasters. They traded primarily in West Indies products such as logwood, mahogany, rum, and sugar. Many pages have been torn out of this volume. Waste book (June 28, 1762-Jan. 15, 1768) contains accounts with persons and firms plus accounts of voyages to the West Indies, Bristol, Amsterdam, Quebec, Virginia, Ireland, and Africa. Entries pertain to items of trade as well as marine insurance, refitting ships, etc.

Van Schaack regarding the publication of his pamphlet on Henry Cruger; and notes relating to appointments by Bancroft as Secretary of the Navy, and to payment from publishers.
