The first order (1862 May 18) authorizes requisition of cartridges if any man in the unit has less than fifty. The second order (1862 May 27) enforces an earlier order requiring ten men from each company to serve as sharpshooters. The third order (1862 May 28) from the headquarters of the Second Military District announces the staff appointments for Brig. Gen. H.W. Mercer as he assumes command of the Second Military District. Fourth order (1862 May 28) also concerns staff appointments of General Mercer.

Discussed is the defense of Charleston, South Carolina, charges against Mercer by General Carlin, his arrest, imprisonment at Fort Pulaski and Savannah, Georgia, and his release.

The collection consists of a microfilm copy of the diary, November 7, 1861-January 14, 1865 of Cornelius R. Hanleiter in five bound volumes of about 75 pages each. Along with these originals is a typed copy of each volume which is microfilmed immediately after the original. The diary documents Hanleiter's service during the Civil War serving mainly in Savannah, coastal Georgia, and the Charleston, South Carolina areas. Hanleiter wrote of life in camp, camp hospitals, death, religious ceremonies, supplies, weapons, fortifications, discipline, coastal vessels, and his family and home in Atlanta.

Mercer, Hugh Weedon, 1808-1877. Mercer family papers, 1848-1965.

Title: Mercer family papers, 1848-1965.

This collection contains diaries and scrapbooks belonging to George Anderson Mercer, 1851-1907, family correspondence, 1848-1913, and genealogies and biographical sketches with correspondence pertaining to them, 1949-1965. Two of G.A. Mercer's diaries cover the Civil War period. The remainder concerns his personal life, notes on wildlife, philosophy, literature, and politics. Two scrapbooks and a volume of case notes are originals. All of the correspondence is original. They are largely family letters, most of them from Gen. Hugh Weedon to his wife, 1848-1851, and to his daughter, Mary (wife of Gen. Henry H. Walker), 1848-1875. Earlier letters are written from Savannah, while later ones are from Baden-Baden, Germany, where he went for his health and where he later died. The letters contain family news and items of local interest. Two of them (March 20, 1849 and May 28, 1959) mention his friend, Col. Robert E. Lee. One letter, December 1, 1868, tells of his second marriage (to Mrs. Bessie Cuyler) and others mention the child of that marriage. The remaining letters are to and from other members of the family as well as various friends.

Stoddard, Mary Lavinia Mongin. Louisa Frederika Alexander Gilmer letters, 1864-1924.

This collection includes two letters from Mary Lavinia Mongin Stoddard (Mrs. John Stoddard) in Savannah, Georgia, to Louisa in 1864 and a third letter from Jacob Florance Minis in Savannah to Marie in 1924. The 1864 letters inform Louisa Gilmer of news of family, friends, and Savannah activities. Mary Lavinia Mongin Stoddard thanks Louisa far caring for her son, Albert Stoddard. Of interest in the letters are mentions of Joe Gamble and General Hugh W. Mercer, who according to Mary Lavinia Mongin Stoddard "looks like an old gray rat." The purpose of Jacob Florance Minis' letter was to send Marie photographs of her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. John Stoddard, which he found among his wife, Louisa Porter Gilmer Minis', papers.
