Yang, Chen Ning, 1922-. Oral history interview with Chen Ning Yang conducted by Andrew Pickering for his book, Constructing quarks, 1978 April 26.
Title:
Oral history interview with Chen Ning Yang conducted by Andrew Pickering for his book, Constructing quarks, 1978 April 26.
One of 36 interviews with particle physicists conducted as background material for Pickering's book, CONSTRUCTING QUARKS: A SOCIOLOGICAL HISTORY OF PARTICLE PHYSICS (1984). This interview is one of several that emphasizes the scientific careers of individuals, from the time they entered physics to the current period. The emphasis was on technical research practice, tracing continuities over time, and exploring breaks. A principal concern was in situating an individual's historically important contributions within the overall context of his career. This interview touches on Yang's early career (chemistry major) in China, and University of Chicago; Ph.D in beta-decay, 1949. Continues work on beta-decay at Princeton University, 1949-1966; interest in statistical mechanics. Extensive discussion of the Yang-Mills gauge field theory, 1946-1978. Brookhaven National Laboratory collaborating with Bob Mills on original Yang-Mills paper, 1954; exchange with Wolfgang Pauli over mass of gauge vectors. Developments in the 1960s. Remarks on philosophy of science.

Pickering, Andrew. Interviews conducted for book, Constructing quarks, 1978-1982.
Title:
Interviews conducted for book, Constructing quarks, 1978-1982.
Consists of audio taped interviews with thirty-six particle physicists, conducted as background material for his book, CONSTRUCTING QUARKS: A SOCIOLOGICAL HISTORY OF PARTICLE PHYSICS (1984). (Two of the interviews have been transcribed: Glashow and Yang.) Pickering sought to document the founding and growth of research traditions structured around the quark concept, therefore, almost all interviews focused upon the interviewee's overall research career rather than narrowly defined historical episodes. They cover the period from 1964 when the quark model was formulated to 1980 when quark theories had come to dominate research practice in high-energy physics. More specific topics include J/psi color models, Fairbank's fractional charges, and the Price magnetic monopoole. Participants include: Henry D. I. Abarbanel, Luis W. Alvarez, Barry Barish, A. O. Barut, John Bell, James Bjorken, Elliott D. Bloom, Gordon Feldman, Geoffrey Chew, Sidney Coleman, A. De Rujula, Sid Drell, John Ellis, P.G.O. Freund, Erwin Gabathuler, Mary Gaillard, H. Collection consists of the documentation amassed in producing the documentary film. It includes transcripts of the interviews conducted for the film with physicists who worked with Fermi in Rome, at Columbia University, the University of Chicago, and Los Alamos; scripts; research notes; and correspondence. Only a small portion of this material was used in the final version of the 46 minute educational film intended primarily for American high school and college students. Unedited transcripts of filmed interviews with Dr. and Mrs. Harold M. Agnew, Eduardo Amaldi, Herbert Anderson, Hans A. Title:
Oral history interview with Ta-you Wu, 1977 February 5.
Deals mainly with postwar buildup of NRC based on E. W. R. Steacie's visions of a fundamental research institute, in addition to industrial research. NRC appointment of G. Herzberg and Wu in 1949; Wu gives up hope of returning to China. State of Canadian physics in the late 1940s. Extensive discussion of the formation of NRC's theoretical division; Herzberg's spectroscopy group; solid state physics; summer seminars (P. A. M. Dirac, C. N. Yang); quantum field theory most fashionable field; many foreigners are postdoctoral fellows at NRC; theoretical physics section too small, Wu's proposal for expansion of theoretical physics staff rejected. Effect of Steacie's death in 1962; B.G. Ballard succeeds Steacie. Wu's plans for NRC, theoretical physics in Canada, 1949-1963 (Volkoff). Wu's frustration and resignation; accepts assignments in Taiwan, Princeton, Switzerland. Early career; China Foundation scholarship brings Wu to University of Michigan (Laporte and Sam Goudsmit), from 1931-1934. Professorship at National University in Peking, 1934; effect of war with Japan, no attempts to organize scientists in war work; comments on Western books on the war; C. N. Yang and T. D. Lee (students of Wu's at Kunming) are sent to the U.S. (University of Chicago) by Chinese government. Wu's affiliation with State University of NY at Buffalo; retired in 1978. Comments on Chalk River National Laboratories, Canadian Journal of Physics, evolution of Separate Pure and Applied Divisions at NRC (G. Herzberg, L.E. Howlett, C.J. Makenzie). Affiliation with science in Taiwan, beginning in 1973; Chinese language and modern science. Chinese physicists return to Taiwan. Council post (1967-1973) seen as his greatest achievement. Comparison of Taiwan National Science Council and the U.S. National Science Foundation. NRC's Dirac Conference, 1955; comments on Dirac; meeting Niels Bohr in China in 1935. Wu's clearance and citizenship difficulties in Canada and the U.S.
