This collection contains correspondence, newsletters, postcards, articles, printed materials, editorial reprints, memorandum, reports, research materials, polls, speeches, and press releases. Of significance is Murphy's correspondence with agricultural leaders and organizations, such as Allan B. Kline, James I. Dolliver, Warren Garst, John Kenneth Galbraith, Guy Gillette, and Roswell Garst. Also included is the correspondence of the Service Bureau (a help service for farmers provided by Wallace's Farmer) and the results of numerous agricultural polls.

This collection includes biographical materials, correspondence, reports, news clippings, drafts, publications, and certificates. Much of the material highligths his work with the American and Iowa Farm Bureau Federations. Correspondents include Ralph K. Bliss, Chester H. Gray, Perry L. Green, Otto Kahn, Allan B. Kline, Frank O. Lowden, H.C. McKenzie, Wheeler McMillen, Gaston Means, Milo Reno, Aaron Sapiro, Gray Silver, and Henry C. Wallace. American Farm Bureau Federation materials include speeches, reports, and publications from its early years. Materials related to Herbert C. Hoover's 1928 presidential campaign includes correspondence with Hoover aides, speeches, and pamphlets. Accounts of Howard's White House visits with Presidents Wilson, Harding, and Coolidge are included. Many of the materials in the collection were gathered by Howard's son, Robert P. Howard, for his book, "James R. Howard and the Farm Bureau" (1983), and the collection includes Robert P. Howard's edited typescript of his book.
