Letters, letterbooks, diaries, ledgers, and journals of merchants John (1709-1795), Thomas (1721-1798), Nicholas (1716-1771), and Ward N. Boylston (1749-1827). Subjects include coffee, rum, potash, sugar and whale oil trade, land speculation, the coming of the American Revolution, Mass. loyalists, construction of the family home in Princeton, and European description and travel. Correspondents include John Q. Receipts, 1829-30, pertaining to a full-length portrait of U.S. President John Quincy Adams commissioned by Ward Nicholas Boylston to present to Harvard College, painted by Gilbert Stuart of Boston in 1825, and finished by Thomas Sully of Philadelphia in 1830. Includes receipts signed by frame maker John Doggett, Gilbert's friend Isaac P. Davis, and Gilbert's wife Charlotte Stuart, administrator of his estate. Also includes a receipt signed by Charles Francis Adams, the administrator of George Washington Adams's estate, for payment received from Ward Nicholas Boylston's estate.

Title: Die for the Boylston medical prize medal depicting Ward Nicholas Boylston, ca. 1819-1832.

This collection contains a metal circular die, counterdie, and two rings used to create the Boylston Medical Dissertation Prize medal. One ring is cracked. The intaglio engraving on the die obverse depicts a profile bust of Ward Nicholas Boylston with a border inscription: "W. N. BOLYSTON SCHOLÆ MEDICINÆ FUNDATOR". There is a cinquefoil design in the outer border after "FUNDATOR." The signature of the engraver is located in very small letters below the bust: "W. WYON SC:". One of the metal rings is engraved "G. STIMPSON." The original painting used for the design of Boylston's profile was created by artist Gilbert Stuart (1755-1828), and the engraving was made in London by William Wyon (1795-1851), a noted English engraver, who became the chief engraver at the Royal Mint in 1828.
