Title:
Papers, 1836-1861.
An eclectic group of letters, related to Randall's varied interest in agriculture, education, history, and government. Mostly incoming, these letters were written by leading individuals of the above mentioned fields and the content is generally detailed and quite eloquent. The letters from noted agriculturalists, Willis Gaylord, William Jarvis, and Luther Tucker concern sheep husbandry. As an educator, Randall received many fine letters from Henry Barnard, Francis Wayland, Lyman C. Draper, and others related to matters of school administration and instruction. His efforts to establish a separate state education department are documented as well. Lastly, there are a number of letters with editors, publishers, and scholars regarding Randall's biography of Thomas Jefferson.

Onderdonk, Henry, 1804-1886. Papers, 1729-1895
Title:
Henry Onderdonk papers 1729-1895
Henry Onderdonk (1804-1886) of Queens County, Long Island, New York, was an educator at Union Hall Academy, and an historian and author of many works based on his research among local records. The Onderdonk papers include manuscript versions of Onderdonk's historical works; notes and transcriptions taken by Onderdonk from private journals, church and local government records, and newspapers; correspondence from historians, genealogists and others often conveying information requested by Onderdonk; and scrapbooks of newspaper clippings covering the 1820s to 1868, with some earlier and later dated material. The bulk of the material concerns the geographic area encompassing present day Queens and Nassau counties, though the other two counties on Long Island, Kings and Suffolk, are also represented. The historical manuscripts, notes and extensive correspondence in the collection tend to center around Onderdonk's research into the American Revolution, Quakers, churches, agriculture/animal husbandry, and genealogies, all with a focus on Long Island. Perhaps the most prominent correspondent is James Fenimore Cooper, whose three letters concern Loyalist Oliver de Lancey. Among the many other correspondents are historians George Bancroft, E. F. Ellet, E. B. O'Callaghan, Jeptha Root Simms, and Jared Sparks. The several scrapbooks in the collection, also with a Long Island focus, concern a number of subjects, principally electoral and partisan politics, agriculture, temperance, announcements and public notices for a wide variety of events, such as school openings, church dedications, auctions, cultural talks, etc., crimes and accidents, court proceedings, Civil War recruitments and drafts, and railroad developments, among other matters.

Henry C. Murphy collection Bulk, 1830-1880 circa 1700-circa 1880
Henry Cruse Murphy (1810-1882) was a Brooklyn lawyer, Democratic Party politician, U.S. Minister to the Netherlands (1857-1861), officer of the New York Bridge Company, and historian. The bulk of the collection reflects Murphy's interest in history, and is comprised of his research notes, transcriptions, translations, abstracts, and draft writings concerning the European exploration and colonization of the Americas. The research material relates to both Murphy's intended works and his published works concerning Henry Hudson, Verrazano, and others. There is substantial correspondence from E. B. O'Callaghan concerning Bohemia Manor, the Labadist settlement in Cecil County, Maryland. The collection also includes many documents related to Murphy's political and commercial interests, such as two letters from candidate and president-elect James Buchanan and a letters-patent for a horse wheel to propel boats, and his observations on the Netherlands while representing the U.S. in that country. The bulk of the collection is in English, but some documents are in Dutch, French, or Latin.

Title:
Abstracts of commissions, attorneys' licenses, pardons, and reprieves, 1677-1770.
This volume contains typewritten abstracts of colonial commissions, licenses, pardons, reprieves, and other documents. It is a copy of a manuscript list or abstract compiled by Edmund B. O'Callaghan sometime in the mid-1800s. O'Callaghan made the original abstract from the Secretary of State's books of commissions that were destroyed in the capitol fire of 1911. It is possible that the typescript was produced by the New York State Library, which bound the volume, but neither the transcriber nor the date the typescript was prepared is known.
