The United Daughters of the Confederacy Collection, mid-nineteenth century-1939, consists of five scrapbooks containing newspaper clippings, histories, photographs, poems, memoirs, postcards, and yearbooks documenting Civil War history and the activities of the organization. The scrapbooks represent Durham's Julian S. Carr Chapter of the organization. Their subject matter pertains largely to the history of North Carolina and tribute to those who served in the Confederate Army. Of particular interest, the organization makes a strong distinction that "Civil War" is an inaccurate term. Instead, it directs its affiliates to label the conflict the "War Between the States."

Anderson, Fayetteville, N.C., a U.D.C. official; and a long letter to James Boyd reacting to his book, "Drums." The reminiscences deal with memories of various wartime affairs; two deal with wartime Christmases.

Organizations represented include the Raleigh Woman's Club, North Carolina Peace Society, Women's Association for the Betterment of Public Schools, Matthew Fontaine Maury Memorial Association, Daughters of the American Revolution, United Daughters of the Confederacy, Colonial Dames, and Roanoke Colony Memorial Association. Items before 1878 are records of family property and estate settlements.

Also included are historical sketches and clippings; scrapbooks and club records; Civil War letters written by Lieutenant Colonel William Murdock Parsley (1840-1865) of the 3rd North Carolina Infantry Regiment, in Virginia and as a prisoner at Fort Delaware and at Hilton Head, S.C., and his memoranda concerning his capture at Spotsylvania, Va., and imprisonment; a portfolio of amateur plays and pageants presented in Wilmington in the 1890s; and other items.

Collection contains personal, professional and family correspondence of three generations of the Brodnax family, centering around John G. Brodnax. Pre-Civil War letters refer to the sale of slaves; wartime correspondence reflects the fear of the advancing Union forces. Postwar papers include Brodnax's appointment as assistant surgeon general of a North Carolina hospital at Petersburg, Va., overseeing the discharge of disabled Confederate soldiers, and his oath of allegiance to the United States. Also includes letters to his wife during her summer visits with relatives. Many papers concern Mrs. Brodnax's activities in the Daughters of the American Revolution and the United Daughters of the Confederacy; others relate to attendance of family members at various North Carolina and Virginia schools and colleges. There are also letters from Germany and Europe in the 1870s and 1880s and Mexico in 1910.
