Carrington Family papers, 1749-1929

Title: Carrington Family papers 1749-1929

The papers consist of correspondence, pamphlets, printed material, scrapbooks, sermons, and other papers relating to members of the Carrington family. Henry Beebee Carrington (1824-1912) and his grandfather, David Lewis Beebe (1763-1803), are two central figures in the papers. Material relating to David Lewis Beebe, including essays and sermons, documents his religious duties in Connecticut and family concerns in Ohio. Henry Beebee Carrington material includes correspondence, a diary, a letterbook, maps, pamphlets, scrapbooks, and other items documenting his experiences as a student at Yale University, as a lawyer practicing in Ohio, and as a commanding officer for Union forces during the Civil War. Carrington's role in military campaigns and treaty negotiations with Indians of the American West is also documented. His design of Fort Philip Kearney, the site of a famous massacre, and treaty negotiations with the Flathead Indians of Montana are detailed in pamphlets, scrapbooks and other papers.

Correspondence, memoranda, notes, legal proceedings, and other papers dealing primarily with the construction and operation of the Central Ontario Railroad Co. and the incorporation and affairs of the Canadian Copper Co. and the Anglo-American Iron Co., three companies which Ritchie served as president. Includes papers relating to Ritchie's discovery of copper and nickel mines in Sudbury, Ontario and to his large coal properties in W. Va., and family correspondence, private account books, and newspaper clippings.

This fonds consists of two letters and a certificate which pertains to a school board appointment in Yarmouth Co. The earliest letter is a transcription of a letter dated 9 August 1866 from Sir William Young of Halifax, Nova Scotia, to Charles Tupper concerning his appointment of a lawyer in a circuit court. The certificate is also dated 1866 and is a photocopied reproduction. The second letter is handwritten, dates from 1887, and is addressed to Sir Andrew Clarke and signed by Charles Tupper.
