Thruston Ballard Morton was a prominent political and business leader in Kentucky during the mid-twentieth century. As a student, Morton attended public schools, the Woodberry Forest School in Virginia, and graduated from Yale University in 1929. He married Belle Clay Lyons in 1931 and had two sons. From 1947 to 1953, Morton served three terms as a representative for Kentucky's Third Congressional District. After his tenure in the House, Morton was appointed Assistant Secretary of State of Congressional Relations by President Dwight D. Eisenhower from 1953 until 1956. In addition, Morton served two terms in the United States Senate for the Commonwealth of Kentucky from 1957 to 1969. Morton was also Chairman of the Republican National Committee and one of the first conservatives to withdraw support from President Lyndon B. Johnson's Vietnam War policies. After his retirement from the Senate, Morton remained active in the Louisville business community, serving as Vice-Chairman of the Board and Director of Liberty National Bank and Chairman of the Board and Director of Churchill Downs. He also served as a Director or Advisor for the Louisville Board of Trade, Pillsbury Company, Texas Gas Company, R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company, the Pittston Company, the University of Louisville, Patton Museum of Cavalry and Armor and the Ohio Valley Assembly. Morton died in Louisville in 1982.

After the war he ran for Congress as a Republican and won. He served in the House for six years. In 1952 he successfully managed the campaign of John Sherman Cooper for the Senate. In January of 1953 President Eisenhower appointed him Assistant Secretary of State for Congressional Relations, a post he held for three years. He obtained a Senate seat in 1956. While a Senator, Morton was elected Chairman of the Republican National Committee, serving from 1959 to 1962.

Guide to the Daily Worker and Daily World Photographs Collection, 1920-2001
Title:
Guide to the Daily Worker and Daily World Photographs Collection, 1920-2001
The official organ of the Communist Party, USA, the Daily Worker's editorial positions reflected the policies of the Communist Party. At the same time the paper also attempted to speak to the broad left-wing community in the United States that included labor, civil rights, and peace activists, with stories covering a wide range of events, organizations and individuals in the United States and around the world. As a daily newspaper, it covered the major stories of the twentieth century. However, the paper always placed an emphasis on radical social movements, social and economic conditions particularly in working class and minority communities, poverty, labor struggles, racial discrimination, right wing extremism with an emphasis on fascist and Nazi movements, and of course the Soviet Union and the world-wide Communist movement. The paper has had a succession of names and has been published in varying frequences between daily to weekly over the course of its existence. In 2010 it ceased print publication and became an electronic, online-only, weekly publication titled the People's World. The bulk of the collection consists of printed photographic images produced through a variety of processes, collected by the photography editors of the Daily Worker and its successor newspapers as a means of maintaining an organized collection of images for use in publication. Images of many important people, groups and events associated with the CPUSA and the American Left are present in the collection, as well as images of a wide variety of people, subjects and events not explicitly linked with the CPUSA or Left politics.

Title:
Rosser Reeves papers, 1927-1994.
Papers of an advertising executive who was chairman of the board of Ted Bates & Co., Inc. The collection is arranged as general correspondence; speeches and writings by and about Reeves; and material on politics, advertising awards, and Ted Bates & Co. The correspondence is comprised of both personal and business mail. Included are letters to and from clients and other advertising executives such as Fairfax M. Cone, Alfred A. Knopf, Gerard Lambert, Frank Hummert, David Ogilvy, and Alfred Politz. There is also significant correspondence reflecting his anti-Communist sentiments and his involvement in Republican politics both nationally and in New York from 1952 to 1964. Fragmentary files on Ted Bates & Co. include marketing plans and research, commercials and advertising copy, records of an FTC investigation and a tax trial to which the Bates agency was a party, and other miscellaneous material. Advertising files include correspondence, research material, and drafts for "Reality in Advertising" (1961), which expressed his well-known "hard-sell philosophy," and correspondence for a proposed second book; speeches and articles by and about Reeves; and material on his induction into the Advertising Hall of Fame. Concerning his political involvement is a box of material on the 1952 Eisenhower Presidential campaign and Thruston B. Morton's senatorial campaign in 1956. The diverse material on the Eisenhower campaign includes a film of spot advertisements. Of more personal interest are poetry files and financial records relating to interests outside the Bates agency such as his publication of "Boats" magazine. The processed portion of this collection is summarized above, dates 1927-1971, and is described in the register. Additional accessions date to 1994 and are described below.

Printed constitutions, minutes of executive committee meetings, records of annual conventions, and executive directors' correspondence, mainly documenting the period 1946-1970. In addition to correspondence, lists, platforms, and resolutions, the convention records include full secretarial transcriptions of proceedings. For several conventions, speeches and remarks by John Byrnes, Thomas Coleman, Glenn Davis, Everett Dirksen, Gerald Ford, Barry Goldwater, Charles Halleck, Warren Knowles, Melvin Laird, Joseph McCarthy, William Miller, Thruston Morton, Richard Nixon, Donald Nutter, Oscar Rennebohm, and Alexander Wiley are included. Peterson, Elly, 1914-. Elly Peterson papers, 1943-1997.
Title:
Elly Peterson papers, 1943-1997.
The Elly McMillan Peterson papers consis of 7 series: Republican Party Activities, ERAmerican, Other Organizational Activities, Personal/Biographical, Speeches, Photographs, Scrapbooks/Clippings. The first series, and by far the largest set of files, has been labelled Republican Party Activities (17 linear ft.; 1958-1985). Grouped by period of time, this series really covers Peterson's entire career as she was a lifelong Republican. As she held many different positions within the party. The series naturally breaks down into chronological divisions: 1958-1964, 1965-1970, 1971-1979, and 1980-1985. Each of these chronological divisions begins with a set of files (arranged roughly by chronology) that include correspondence, memoranda, and other forms of communication. These files are then followed by sub-series of material either resulting from specific activities within the party or offices held either within the state or national Republican party. Thus files pertaining to Peterson's campaign for the U.S. Senate in 1964 will be found within the 1958-1964 division and files created while serving with the President Ford Committee in 1976 will be found in the 1971-1979 division. Other Republican party material will of course be found within genre series - Speeches, Photographs, and Scrapbooks/Clippings. The second series - ERAmerica - relates to Peterson's work within this organization to obtain passage of the Equal Rights Amendment. The series (1.5 lin. ft.; 1971-1982) includes material that predates the establishment of ERAmerica but which relates to women's issues in general. The files have been arranged alphabetically by topic. Papers from Peterson's other group activities have been put into Other Organizaional Activities (1 lin. ft.; 1969-1983). These files document in part Peterson's many trips abroad with women's organizations, notably to China and the Middle East. Personal/Biographical (.3 lin. ft.; 1955-1981) includes information about awards received by Peterson and some of her private writings. Speeches (1 lin. ft.; 1953-1980) includes both manuscripts of her speeches and also published copies. Other speeches of Peterson will be found (as indicated) in the Republican Party Activities and ERAmerica series. The Photographs series (.3 lin. ft.; ca. 1950-ca. 1976) and the Scrapbooks/Clippings series (2 lin. ft.; 1943-ca. 1980) are self-explanatory.
