There is a sizeable amount of correspondence from Tillie Olsen, 1959-73, Wallace Stegner, 1944-73, Jessamyn West, 1948-1983, Richard Jones, 1969-2000; his editors Carolyn Blakemore, Paul Brooks, and Dorothy De Santillana; and his agent Henry Volkening. Other correspondents include Bruce Bliven, Thomas Bontly, Bliss Carnochan, John Cheever, Avis De Voto, Maxwell Geismar, Helen Howe, Janet Lewis, John L'Heureux, Erika Mann, Theodore Morrison, Anais Nin, Katherine Anne Porter, May Sarton, Stephen Spender, and Scott Turow. Collection also includes a copy of Todd Bauer's 1996 M.A. thesis on the Stanford Creative Writing Program 1958-1963.

Includes 13 p. of page proofs from the New World Writing version of Olsen's short story, "Tell Me a Riddle," stapled to blue paper and emended by Olsen (changes are both holograph and typed). Some pages contain notes on the verso of the blue paper (emendations on 16 p. total). The page proofs are accompanied by a typed letter (1 p.) to Olsen from Dorothy M. McKittrick, Head of the Permissions Department at Doubleday, asking for Olsen's permission to include "Tell Me a Riddle" in Prize Stories 1961: The O. Henry Awards. Olsen has signed this form in black ink, dated it August 5, 1960, and noted in red ink that her permission is granted "providing corrections attached are made." This letter is accompanied by a typed list (1 p.) summarizing Olsen's required changes; the list has pencil annotations probably made by printers at Doubleday. Following the page proofs is a typed letter signed (1 p.) from Olsen to [Henry] Volkening, her literary agent, dated Aug. 24, 1960, telling him that she has more changes to send to Doubleday. The letter is accompanied by a typed list (1 p.) of five additional changes.

Russell and Volkening is one of New York's oldest literary agencies, opened in 1940 by Diarmuid Russell and Henry Volkening. They represented some of the most noted writers in the history of American publishing, including Eudora Welty, Bernard Malamud, Anne Tyler, George Plimpton, Barbara Tuchman, Saul Bellow, Ann Petry, A. J. Liebling, and Nadine Gordimer. Included in the collection are business correspondence; financial material; inventories and submission records of manuscripts submitted to the agency and through the agency to publishers and others; some manuscripts; and other material regarding the business of the agency. The bulk of the collection is represented by correspondence between Diarmuid Russell, Henry Volkening, Timothy Seldes, and other agents and their clients, notably Eudora Welty, Barbara Tuchman, Mavis Gallant, May Sarton, George Plimpton, Anne Petry, Wright Morris, and many others.

The papers contain Wolfe family correspondence, correspondence with Maxwell Perkins and Edward Aswell in their roles as executors of the Thomas Wolfe Estate, personal correspondence of Fred Wolfe, manuscripts about Thomas Wolfe, legal documents including executors' reports of the estate of Thomas Wolfe, correspondence about the Thomas Wolfe Memorial Association and the restoration of the Old Kentucky Home, family memorabilia, and volumes that chiefly relate to the Wolfe family. Family correspondence covers the years 1882 to 1977 and includes letters to and from Fred Wolfe, Mabel Wolfe Wheaton, Julia E. Wolfe, Frank Wolfe, W.O. Wolfe, Effie Wolfe Gambrell, and other members of the Wolfe and Gambrell families. Some of this material relates to Thomas Wolfe, but much of it concerns family matters. There is considerable correspondence between family members about the Thomas Wolfe Memorial Association, which shows the part the family played in the restoration and preservation of the Old Kentucky Home. Correspondence with Maxwell Perkins and Edward Aswell relates to the Thomas Wolfe Estate. There is also correspondence with members of the New York law firm of Ernst, Cane, and Berner, and especially with Paul Gitlin of that firm who succeeded Aswell as executor of the Thomas Wolfe Estate. Other correspondence consists of Fred Wolfe's personal correspondence, some of which demonstrates his efforts in preserving the memory of Thomas Wolfe's life and work. There are letters to and from individuals who wrote about or knew Thomas Wolfe, especially LeGette Blythe, Aldo P. Magi, John Skally Terry, Andrew Turnbull, Henry T. Volkening, Richard Walser, and Wolfe's literary agent and first biographer Elizabeth Nowell. There are also subject files containing material relating to the Thomas Wolfe Memorial Association, documents from the Thomas Wolfe Estate, other legal and financial documents, materials relating to real estate in Asheville and in Florida, correspondence about grave markers in Asheville, a few manuscripts of published and unpublished articles about Thomas Wolfe, and a few copies of Fred Wolfe's speeches about Thomas Wolfe. There are playbills from productions related to Thomas Wolfe or his work, tourist guides for Asheville, and publicity materials about the Thomas Wolfe Memorial Association and the Old Kentucky Home. Wolfe family memorabilia includes commencement invitations; some business cards for the Old Kentucky Home; and a small printed advertisement for the North Carolina, Julia E. Wolfe's 1904 boarding house in Saint Louis, Mo. Also included are Mabel Wolfe Wheaton's autograph album and guest book, a small account book that belonged to Julia E. Wolfe before her marriage, a small notebook of W.O. Wolfe, and other items.

The Henry Volkening Collection of J.F. Powers contains correspondence dating from 1930 through 1949. The letters appear in a single series and are divided into two subject categories: correspondence with Jim Powers and letters promoting other clients' works (primarily Christine Weston). The materials in this collection document the early years of Powers' writing career. In correspondence with his agent, Powers discusses revising and renaming some of his stories as he prepares to publish Prince of Darkness and Other Stories. He examines the effect his titles may have on Catholic readership and comments on the difficulty of publishing in The New Yorker and Harper's. Powers frequently mentions submitting stories to Chuck Shattuck of Accent for criticism, though Shattuck's comments do not appear in the correspondence.
