This collection consists primarily of letters, 1863-1865, from Robert Augustus Stiles to his family concerning religious sentiments and his service in the 1st Company of Richmond Howitzers at the battles of the Wilderness, Spotsylvania Court House, and Cold Harbor. Also in the collection are extracts from Stiles' memoir, Four Years Under Marse Robert (New York, 1903), and notes, n.d., on prison reform by his daughter, Lelia Caperton Stiles (1875-1895).

Among the items are a Bermuda land plat, 1787, with signatures of Sarah Nash, James Perot, William Todd, Mallory Todd, John Jennings, Robert Jennings; a report by George Frederick Holmes, William Holmes McGuffey, and John B. Minor on the University of Virginia magazine, 1858; a description of the University in 1865; text of an anniversary address before the University of Virginia Jefferson Society. The collection contains chiefly personal correspondence and papers of this former Major of Robert E. Lee's Civil War staff. Some papers relate to his book "Four Years with Marse Robert" and other writings; other papers relate to a speech given at the dedication of a Confederate monument at the University of Virginia cemetery. Correspondents include: Robert Alonzo Brook, Churchill Jones Gibson, John James Lafferty, Philip Watkins McKinney, Stiles's father Joseph Clay Stiles, and John West. Also included is a letter, 1890 April 26, Charlottesville, Va., from John Barbee Minor to Stiles, Richmond, Va., commenting on the book "Why the Solid South?", on Abraham Lincoln's perceptive plans for the post-Civil War South, and on national politics.

Mackay and Stiles family papers, 1743-1975.

The collection consists of correspondence, account books, plantation and slave records, memoranda books, financial papers, and legal papers. The papers document the family's business, political, and social life in England (1806-1811), Austria (where William Henry Stiles was U.S. charge d'affaires, 1845-1849), and Georgia. Topics include activities at the Savannah Poor House and Hospital, the care and treatment of a mental patient, work of the United States Army Corps of Engineers on the Savannah River, the Second Seminole War, plantation life, trips to the Virginia springs, the education of women, and the impact of the Civil War. Volumes are chiefly merchantile and plantation records. There is also microfilm containing a brief Civil War diary of Robert Mackay Stiles (1836-1865) and genealogical information on the related Couper and Maxwell families.
