The Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters Collection includes printed matter, correspondence, legal documents, addresses by A. Philip Randolph and other material reflecting the activities of this union. The correspondence files include outgoing letters relating to labor and union rights. There is substantial legal correspondence with the Delson, Levin and Gordon law firm (1950's-1960's), which represented the BSCP. There are also letters to and from Randolph, the international president; Benjamin F. McLaurin, international field organizer (1950's) and Eastern Zone supervisor (1960's); Thomas Patterson, who was BSCP Eastern Zone supervisor from 1951-1956; and BSCP International President C. L. Dellums (1968-1970). The correspondence often concerns the cases of individual workers, and pension and contract rights. Included are addresses and resolutions submitted by Randolph at various conventions of the BSCP. The papers also contain two union contracts between the BSCP and the Pullman Company (1953), and the BSCP and the Seaboard Coast Line Railroad Company (1969); clippings (1960-1977); programs from events honoring the BSCP; and financial records including ledgers and financial journals.

The Records of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), Region I document the daily work of the NAACP in the Western United States from 1942-1986 (bulk 1945-1977). Although the Region initially consisted of four states and grew to include nine, the bulk of the collection documents the work of the Region I Office in California, particularly in regard to statewide legislation. One of the most comprehensive record series is that of Branch Files, which contains documentation of the work of local (usually citywide) branches throughout the Region. The work of Regional Directors, Noah W. Griffin, Franklin Williams, Tarea Hall Pittman, Leonard H. Carter, and Virna M. Canson, is especially well represented within the collection.

Part I consists of general correspondence, subject files, and personal papers of the brotherhood's founder, A. Philip Randolph, documenting the growth and functions of the union. The Subject File contains a large quantity of material on the growth and functions of the union from 1940 to 1968 and includes agreements reached between the brotherhood and the nation's major railroad lines. Included also is material exchanged between the local unions and the brotherhood's headquarters, as well as files relating to biennial conventions, financial matters, and the ladies auxiliary. There are no records relating to Randolph's creation of the union in 1925 or to the brotherhood's subsequent struggles for existence while organizing various union locals. Part II consists of correspondence and subject files of brotherhood officials Benjamin F. McLaurin (international field organizer), A. Philip Randolph (founder and president), and Ashley L. Totten (secretary-treasurer), and other subject files, financial records, and miscellaneous records. The Subject File in Part II contains additional agreements between the brotherhood and the railroad companies, but most of the files concern the participation of the union in railway and labor organizations. The most informative material relating to the organizing activities of the union can be found in the files pertaining to the Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen and Enginemen. These activities were carried out under the auspices of the Provisional Committee To Organize Colored Locomotive Firemen. The records document the struggles of African-American firemen to retain their jobs and seniority rights with the railroad companies while seeking to be represented by a labor union. Briefs of legal cases brought by the brotherhood on behalf of the African-American firemen are also included in the files. Some of the material in the files relating to Canada also touches on the organizing activities of the brotherhood.

Audio tapes (including listening copies) and related materials chiefly containing radio programs, 1958-1961 and undated, hosted by Gilbert Brooks and sponsored by the Haywood, Ca., chapter of the NAACP. The programs are mostly concerned with the status of African Americans in the mid-20th century; civil rights, education, and employment are among the topics discussed. A few tapes appear to contain interviews with C. L. Dellums of the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters. Also included are several tapes containing recordings of NAACP meetings and other, perhaps. unrelated, activities.
