Title: Papers, 1923-1932.

The Donald McKay Memorial Committee Papers consist mainly of letters received by the secretary, Charles Knowles Bolton, 1923-1932. These letters document efforts to raise funds for construction of a monument to "America's greatest shipbuilder." Letters to Bolton include those from Franklin D. Roosevelt, Guy Lowell, and Allan Forbes. Besides correspondence, the collection includes financial records (1925-1931), membership lists, circulars, & newspaper clippings from Boston papers reporting on Committee activities. In 1933, a cenotaph commemorating McKay (designed by Wm. T. Aldrich) was erected on castle Island in South Boston.

Century Company records

Title: Century Company records

The Century Company published the Century Illustrated Monthly Magazine, which was widely regarded as the best general periodical of its time, performing a role as cultural arbiter during the 1880s and 1890s. It was founded in New York City in 1881 and also published the children's magazine St. Nicholas, dictionaries, and books. The Century Company records date from 1870 to the 1930s and chiefly contain correspondence with contributors, readers, public figures, and literary agents. A number of manuscripts and proofs in the collection are extensively edited and taken with annotations on letters provide a detailed record of the outlook, standards, and functions of the company.

Collection contains documents relating to the founding and incorporation of Radcliffe College, 1878-1896; and to the Harvard/Radcliffe relationship, 1882-1985. Included are articles of incorporation, 1882, photocopy of the Charter, 1894, printed statutes, and agreements with Harvard University. Materials describe the foundation and history of the early years of Radcliffe, the debate over the admission of women to Harvard Law School and Medical School, and the changing relationship between the two institutions. Also Council and Executive Committee records containing minutes, 1882-1999; correspondence, 1897-1914, including that of Chairman Frederick Cabot of the Finance Committee; and other materials relating to college fundraising, appointments, buildings and grounds, and student activities. Records of the Council's Committee on Higher Education of Women include minutes, correspondence, memoranda and questionnaires, 1944-1945. Questionnaires (from classes of 1888-1944) pertain to family, marriage and career patterns of Radcliffe students. Board of Trustees, Corporation and Associates records contain minutes, 1882-1999; correspondence, 1942-1980; and sub-committee materials. Administrative Board records include minutes concerning academic affairs, correspondence, and Standing Committee in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences' recommendations for degrees, 1889-1914.

Title: Sylvan and Robert L. Bien architectural drawings, 1923-1996 (bulk 1930s-1980s).

This collection contains architectural drawings, and some supplementary archival materials, for buildings primarily designed or altered by Sylvan Bien alone or in partnership with his son, Robert L. Bien. Most of the projects represented in this collection are apartment buildings located in New York City, particularly on the Upper East Side, with some work in surrounding regions and states. In several cases, drawings by the original architect for buildings later altered or studied by Bien are also included in this collection. Lastly, a small group of drawings created by Robert Bien while with Eggers Group is also included.
