The records provide a detailed view of the Duveen Brothers business activities in London, Paris, and New York. Although the archive extends from 1876-1981, the bulk of the material dates from Joseph Duveen's tenure as president of the firm, 1909-1939, and the period from 1939 to 1964 when Edward Fowles directed the firm (with Armand Lowengard until 1943). The mass of documents, such as cables and letters, invoices, and ledger and stock books, give a day-by-day account of art dealing, business strategy, and the individuals involved. Series I (circa 112 linear feet) contains the firm's business records. Stock books indicate where objects were sent for repair, to whom objects were sent on approbation along with the date of sale and the price realized. Invoices include receipts, sales invoices sent to clients, lists of cablegrams and shipment of stock from each branch of the business. Series II (circa 155 linear feet) consists of papers and correspondence which broadly cover the interaction between the Duveen Brothers firm and its clients, business associates, and the public. The correspondence describes art collecting trends among museums and individuals, the availability and purchase of art, art research and authentication, and the firm's general business practices. Eleven boxes of correspondence with Bernard Berenson detail his business relationship with the firm. Also included are records of lawsuits, correspondence between branches (some written in code), correspondence with museums, papers regarding galleries, Edward Fowles' papers, papers concerning exhibitions and loans, and papers regarding major art collectors and consultants. Some records of Kleinberger Galleries (apparently the papers of Harry G. Sperling, president) form a subseries within this series, and contain correspondence. Series III (circa 127 linear feet) includes some photographs, indices, negatives, and x-rays. This series represents the Duveen Brother's stock of images. Indices are available for the majority of the negatives in cold storage.

Century Company records

Title: Century Company records

The Century Company published the Century Illustrated Monthly Magazine, which was widely regarded as the best general periodical of its time, performing a role as cultural arbiter during the 1880s and 1890s. It was founded in New York City in 1881 and also published the children's magazine St. Nicholas, dictionaries, and books. The Century Company records date from 1870 to the 1930s and chiefly contain correspondence with contributors, readers, public figures, and literary agents. A number of manuscripts and proofs in the collection are extensively edited and taken with annotations on letters provide a detailed record of the outlook, standards, and functions of the company.

The papers consist of correspondence conducted by Edith A. and Percy S. Straus with art dealers, art historians, critics, and collectors who assisted them with the selection and acquisition of works for their collection. Dating from 1917 to 1958, the papers illustrate the development of a significant private collection and document the various relationships the Strauses maintained with the connoisseurs who guided their collecting. The papers include invoices which carry statements of value, provenance, and attribution; letters from art historians (among them, Max J. Friedl"ander, Adolfo Venturi, Richard Offner, Bernard Berenson, Roberto Longhi, Erwin Panofsky, F. Mason Perkins, R. Langton Douglas, and Leo Planiscig) who gave opinions on the attribution, condition, and quality of works considered for acquisition by Mr. and Mrs. Straus; receipts and consular invoices; and photographs. Many of the photographs are annotated on the reverse with handwritten statements of attribution by the authorities consulted in the purchase.

Letters, drafts and manuscript revisions of books, photographic materials, annotated books, and personal papers primarily document Goldscheider's writings on art and artists. Materials include informal notes, drafts, printed copies of books with Goldscheider's annotations and revisions, author's proofs, galleys, and some final published editions, together with photographs, slides and printed reproductions of art works intended for private study as well as for publication. Complementing these are Goldscheider's correspondence in his capacity as a principal in the Phaidon publishing house and a respected connoisseur and art historian. Series I. Correspondence (arranged chronologically), consists mostly of letters and copies of letters to Goldscheider dating 1925-1973 from individuals associated with Phaidon and other publishing houses, as well as art historians, collectors, museum personnel, critics, and dealers. Correspondents include: Hubertus von Beyer, Kenneth Clark, Robert Langton Douglas, Reinhold Neven Dumont, Hans Fegers, Paul Ganz, Philip Hendy, Heinrich Klumbies, P.J. LeBrooy, Fritz Novotny, K.T. Parker, A.E. Popham, Gustav Schimert, Irving Stone, Frederick Ungar, Stanley Unwin, and Joseph Caspar Witsch. Series II, Writings: art and poetry contains drafts of books; research notes; poetry; and printed matter. Much of this material is devoted to Michelangelo as well as to other major figures of the Italian Renaissance. Other topics range from Roman portraiture to Velasquez, Vermeer and Rembrandt to Kokoschka. This series also contains offprints of articles by Goldscheider and reviews of Goldscheider's books as well as poems by Goldscheider and Hubertus von Beyer. Series III, Book illustrations and photographs. The majority of items in this section are offset reproductions for the Phaidon Press's Botticelli (1937) and photographs and tranparencies of wax and terra-cotta models by Michelangelo. Series IV, Books, includes six annotated volumes. Five are works by Goldscheider: Die Schönsten deutschen Gedichte (1924); A survey of Michelangelo's models in wax and clay (1962); two versions of Leonardo da Vinci (1959 and 1960 proof); and Kokoschka (1966). The sixth volume is A.B. de Vries's Jan Vermeer van Delft. Series V. Personal papers, includes family portraits and other personal photographs, immigration and naturalization papers, travel visas and other state documents, bank account papers and personal address books. There are also publicity materials relating to Phaidon's Golden Jubilee celebrations in 1973.

Born, raised, and educated in Philadelphia, John Graver Johnson became one of the city's preeminent citizens, noted not only for his long and successful practice as a corporate attorney but also for his extensive collection of European art. These papers document Johnson's efforts to acquire such works of art, which by the time of his death in 1917, amounted to more than 1,200 paintings. The bulk of material is Johnson's correspondence with dealers and other art experts who advised him and sometimes negotiated purchases on his behalf, including Bernard Berenson, W. R. Valentiner and R. Langton Douglas. Of a more personal nature is a photograph album that contains early portraits of Johnson's wife, Ida (nee Powel).
