Of interest among many topics are the Compromise of 1850; states' rights politics in the 1850s, opposition to Andrew Jackson's administration; engineering work for the New York and Erie Rail Road; the cruise of the U.S.S. Cyane, 1842-1844; Indian burial grounds; 1790s [?]and 1830s slave swaps and other news of family servants including hires, illnesses and death; St. Mary's College, Baltimore, 1811; and Reconstruction. In addition there are architectural plans, plats, and legal documents re the "Elmwood" estate; daybooks; ante-bellum political speeches and broadsides; school papers; artistic sketches; scrapbooks; debating society minutes and journals; business and legal papers; genealogical papers; papers regarding American Red Cross work in France during World War I; and a journal of travel in Portugal, 1807.

Letters, 1814 August to November, to his father, Captain Mitchell Robertson, Overall's Mills, Shenandoah County, Va., concern Robertson's service as surgeon during the War of 1812. One letter, 1814 September 17, briefly describes the bombardment of Ft. McHenry. Letters, 1831-1839, Richmond, Va., to his wife Elizabeth Robertson, Luray, Page County, Va., while he served in various sessions of the General Assembly, occasionally mention his legislative work but chiefly discuss family news. One letter, 1833 December 29, describes his first train ride on a Petersburg to North Carolina railroad.

Family papers, chiefly of Joseph W. Campbell, include his business correspondence, receipts from the sheriff, the clerk and the commissioner of the revenue of Albemarle County, Va., for taxes, court business, fines for absence at muster and a tax in kind form, 1864, for the estimating and assessing of agricultural products issued by the Confederate government to Campbell. The collection also contains business cards of Robert Sampson, a Charlottesville, V., and letters from local residents including William J. Robertson and S. V. Southall.
