Russell and Volkening is one of New York's oldest literary agencies, opened in 1940 by Diarmuid Russell and Henry Volkening. They represented some of the most noted writers in the history of American publishing, including Eudora Welty, Bernard Malamud, Anne Tyler, George Plimpton, Barbara Tuchman, Saul Bellow, Ann Petry, A. J. Liebling, and Nadine Gordimer. Included in the collection are business correspondence; financial material; inventories and submission records of manuscripts submitted to the agency and through the agency to publishers and others; some manuscripts; and other material regarding the business of the agency. The bulk of the collection is represented by correspondence between Diarmuid Russell, Henry Volkening, Timothy Seldes, and other agents and their clients, notably Eudora Welty, Barbara Tuchman, Mavis Gallant, May Sarton, George Plimpton, Anne Petry, Wright Morris, and many others.

The collection consists mostly of correspondence from Russell about his social and literary activities. The vast majority of this correspondence is to William K. Magee. There are a few letters to Charles Weekes, Robert Graves, and Miss Buxton. In addition, there is a letter from AE's son Diarmuid Russell to Magee re Magee's proposed biography of AE and a photocopy of a letter (transcript) to Judge Richard Campbell from Dudley Digges re Campbell's broadcast "Farewell to AE". Other materials include a few clippings about AE (obit etc.) and an undated b/w photo of AE.

Correspondence, poetry, fiction, lectures, speeches, essays, articles, reviews, transcripts of interviews with illustrators, art work, biographical materials, awards, and newspaper clippings. Includes drafts of children's books, including Household tales of moon and water and A visit to William Blake's inn, and the lectures comprising Angel in the parlor. Willard's novel, Things invisible to see, is represented in all stages of creation and publication. Principal correspondents include Mindy Aloff, Donald Hall, Walter Lowenfels, Ilse Plume, John Tagliabue, and Carlton Wells.

Letters, manuscripts, clippings, photographs, broadsides, books, and prints. Includes material resulting from personal contact between James A. Healy and Oliver St. John Gogarty, Elizabeth C. Yeats, George Yeats, Ernest Boyd, Richard Campbell, and Irene Haugh. A selection of Cuala Press greeting cards and prints is included. Others represented in the collection are Paul Henry; W. B. Yeats's father, brother, and two sisters; the Fay Brothers, Dudley Digges, James Joyce, John M. Synge, Maud Gonne, and George Moore. From the estate of the critic, Ernest Boyd, Healy obtained letters from English writers prompted by research Boyd did for his book, THE IRISH LITERARY RENAISSANCE (1916).

A collection of letters dating from 1955 to 1981 between Travers and her U.S. literary agents Diarmuid Russell and Harriet Wasserman of the agency Russell & Volkening, Inc., New York. There is related correspondence from publishers (Harcourt Brace Jovanovich Inc.), editors, and lawyers to both Travers and her literary agents. Includes several letters of Barbara Moriarty, Travers's sister, to the literary agents acknowledging royalty payments. The papers also include copies of some of Travers's typed manuscripts and essays. In several letters from the early 1960s she discusses and criticizes the Walt Disney company's 1964 film version of Mary Poppins, starring Julie Andrews.
