American Scientist Sigma Xi, the Scientific Research Society, was formed in 1886 at Cornell University as an honor society for science and engineering; the original founders of Sigma Xi were members of the Sibley College of Mechanical Engineering at the university. Moving beyond the Society's early intention of fostering companionship, Sigma Xi has since evolved to offer the sciences a strong, unified voice in support of scientific advancement and achievement.

Colwell, Rita R., 1934-. Rita Colwell Papers, 1962-1997

Title: Rita Colwell Papers, 1962-1997

These papers contain materials relating to some of Rita R. Colwell's professional activities. Series One covers her involvement in various programs of the American Society for Microbiology from 1963 until her election as the Society's President in 1983. Series Two relates to her activities in the International Union of Microbiological Societies from 1962-86. Series Three contains the records from her tenure as American Society for Microbiology President-elect, President, and Past-President, covering the years 1983-86. Series Four and Series Five are comprised of materials donated subsequent to processing of the first three series. Series Four contains records of Dr. Colwell's various American Society for Microbiology activities after her term as President. Series Five documents her tenure as Chair of the Board of Governors of the American Academy of Microbiology. Colwell has also served in the National Science Foundation and as a professor at Johns Hopkins University and the University of Maryland, College Park; these papers were removed from this collection.
