The Sparks collection consists of original and transcribed historical documents and correspondence, chiefly concerning the American colonies and the original thirteen states, collected or transcribed beginning in 1819 by Jared Sparks. The collection includes the papers of Sir Francis Bernard and George Chalmers, letters of Benjamin Franklin, Alexander Hamilton, the Marquis de Lafayette, and George Washington, the journals of Thomas Ainslie, the Board of Trade, the New York Provincial Congress and Conventions, as well as the papers and records from state public offices, among many others. The Sparks collection also contains his own historical essays and compositions, published articles, letter books, diaries, account books related to his college days, professional research, and material documenting his tenure as College president.

Vance, Clarence H. (Clarence Hayden). Papers, 1913-1960.

Title: Papers, 1913-1960.

Correspondence, mansucripts, transcripts, documents, photographs, and printed materials assembled by Vance for his dissertation, a biography of Myles Cooper (1737-1785), clergyman, Loyalist, and second president of King's College (now, Columbia University) from 1763 until 1775. There are transcripts of very many letters and manuscripts by and about Myles Cooper and King's College along with pertinent photographs and printed materials which Vance collected from American, English, and Scottish sources. There are also materials about Samuel Seabury (1729-1796) and Isaac Sears (1730-1786) whose biographical entries Vance wrote for the DICTIONARY OF AMERICAN BIOGRPAHY. Among the correspondents are Gertrude Atherton, Nicholas Murray Butler, Marcus Benjamin, Dixon Ryan Fox, and Dumas Malone.

The bulk of the material is between 1731 and 1811, with much dating 1779 and 1780 when Whittelsey was the clothing purchasing agent for the Continental Army in Connecticut.

Smith, Paschal Nelson. Letterbook, 1775-1781.

Title: Letterbook, 1775-1781.

Consists of 708 copies of letters written in several hands relating to the business and personal affairs of Paschal Nelson Smith from July 1775 to August 1781. The correspondence indicates that a large part of the business included the selling of shares in and/or the outfitting of privateers as well as the sale and dispersal of their commodities. Much of it involved sending merchant ships out with cargo to be exchanged at various ports of call for goods or hard currency. Many of the letters were written to captains of particular boats directing them where to go and telling them what cargo to take on. Scattered throughout the letters are references to current events such as military movements in New England and New York, the Battle of Bunker Hill, the enlistment of Isaac Sears in the Colonial Army, actions of the Colonial Legislature, the decline in value of paper money, and the effects of British embargoes and blockades on commerce. Correspondents include Benedict Arnold, Hannah Arnold, Rebecca Smith Aspinwall, Horatio Gates, John Grenell, James Jarvis, Henry Knox, Lewis Morris, John Ramsay, David Sears, Isaac Sears, Henry Smith, Oliver Smith, and Baron von Steuben.
