Correspondence of Thomas Jefferson regarding the founding of the University of Virginia. The collection also contains the report of the Rockfish Gap Commission; balance sheets and estimates of University income and expenses; financial statement; a construction estimate; land plats; a bond; a petition to Congress regarding the removal of tariff on books; specifications; Board of Visitors resolutions; book lists; a plat by Achilles Broadhead; and a deed from the Proctor to the Board. In addition there are elevations for several buildings including Nichols # 374, 375, 376, and 377 as well as the Architrave fragment Nichols #378. Correspondents include John Q. John Griscom correspondence, 1804-1851

Title: John Griscom correspondence 1804-1851

John Griscom (1774-1852) was the first American educator to teach chemistry in 1803. He taught at Queens College (now Rutgers University) from 1812 to 1828 and at Columbia College; organized the New York High School for Boys in 1825; was principal of the Friend's School in Providence, R.I.; and founded the New York Society for the Prevention of Pauperism, the Society for the Reformation of Juvenile Delinquents, and the House of Refuge which was the first reformatory in the United States. Collection consists of letters to Griscom, with a few by him, concerning education, chemistry, pauperism, juvenile delinquency, and the medical properties of cod-liver oil and iodine. Some letters relate to personal and family matters.

The records of the Rutgers Medical College document the efforts of two prominent New York City physicians in their attempts to secure an academic sponsorship of medical education during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. On three different occasions Queen's College and Rutgers College were solicited to grant degrees to students studying medicine at institutions geographically located in New York City. Concerns of competition with existing medical schools, ability to license physicians to practice medicine in one jurisdiction while receiving credentials from another, and the role of medical education in these early years are addressed in this collection.
