Correspondence of Emma Seymour and Philip Battell during their engagement and letters to Emma from family and friends before and after her marriage. Emma's letters detail daily life in Middlebury, Vt., with news of family and friends; descriptions, some very detailed, of physical surroundings; and descriptions of health care and dentistry. Philip Battell's letters mention family and friends, but mainly concern his thoughts about life, literature, and love, and include some poetry he wrote.
