Emma Hart Seymour Battell was named for Emma Hart Willard and attended Emma Willard's school in Troy, N.Y., 1823-1825. She met Philip Battell in 1825 when he was a student at Middlebury College and became secretly engaged to him before he graduated in 1826. When they met in 1825, she was living in the house her father, Horatio Seymour (1778-1857) had built but spent from 1825? to winter 1830 at the Wainwright house. In the fall and winter of 1834-1835 she visited relatives in New York State. In 1836 she and philip were married and moved to Cleveland where he was practicing law. In the summer of 1838 Emma and her daughter, Emma Battell, returned to visit and apparently never returned to Cleveland. Son, Joseph was born in 1839. During the fall and winter of 1840-41,Emma and Philip traveled in the South for her health, returning to Middlebury in May, 1841. She died in November 1841.
