Collection contains the personal and business papers of the Lasselle family, traders and merchants of early Vincinnes and Logansport, Ind., and papers of other Vincennes families connected with the Lasselle family. The Indiana Historical Society has made transcriptions and translations of the French language papers, 1733-1809. The Indiana Historical Society also has copies of the transcriptions and translations.

Some material relates to slavery, Native Americans, the capture of Kaskaskia during the Revolution, and military activities in the War of 1812.

Title: Series III : Collected papers on Indiana history, 1759-1882.

Series III contains materials Porter collected to write a history of Indiana. Included are the papers of Benjamin Parke, John Dumont, Charles Dewey, and Samuel Merrill, and materials on Vincennes and early Indiana. Parke's papers include his correspondence with James Brown and discuss Aaron Burr and the Burr Conspiracy, Republican politics, and James Wilkinson. Dumont's papers include correspondence while he served in the Indiana House, and a number of speeches. Dewey's papers are mostly from his years as U.S. District Attorney and focus on his official duties. Merrill's papers deal mainly with his tenure as president of the Indiana State Bank and the Madison and Indianapolis Rail Road Company. The remaining papers deal with Vincennes and early Indiana. Other topics include Samuel Baird's surveys of Vincennes and a summary of speeches made by William Henry Harrison in 1802 at his first Indian Council.

English, William H. Collection, 1762-1895

Title: English, William H. Collection 1762-1895

William H. English (1822-1896) combined active careers in politics and business with an avid interest in the history of his native state of Indiana. An influential member of the Democratic Party, he was a member of the House of Representatives from 1852 to 1860 and was his party's candidate for the vice-presidency in 1880. English aspired to write a history of his state and to this end amassed a variety of original sources and transcripts. Before his death in 1896, he had written The Conquest of the Northwest & the Life of George R. Clark (Indianapolis: Bowen-Merrill Co., 1896, 2 vols.) and his unpublished manuscript, now in this collection, which traces the history of Indiana down to approximately the year 1800. Contains English's unpublished manuscript on the history of Indiana, original and transcribed manuscripts, secondary material relating to English's research on the people and history of Indiana, and newspaper clippings. Includes personal and political correspondence, legal and judicial records, and photographs that document the early settlement and establishment of government in the territory and state of Indiana.
