Ballantine, John, 1716-1776. Diary, 1737-1743; 1753-1774.

Title: Diary, 1737-1743; 1753-1774.

The original diary of John Ballantine, 1737-1743; 1753-1774, is in the possession of the Westfield Athenaeum and is now almost illegible. This typed transciption was made in 1886 by Joseph D. Bartlett ( - ) of Westfield, Mass., and is heavily annotated by Bartlett. The annotations usually appear in parentheses but are sometimes difficult to distinguish from Ballantine's original text. Not all of the material in the original diary was transcribed and there are freqent errors, especially in the spelling of proper names. However, the diary transcription does provide valuable information in terms of the religious and political issues that were much discussed in New England during the 18th century. The diary also concerns social customs of the era, and Ballantine listed at the end of each month and year the number of births and deaths in Westfield, grouped by sex and age. Included are references to the Rev. Robert Breck (1713-1784), whose ordination had stirred a controversy in 1736; the outbreak and battles of the French and Indian War; the "Separatists" who broke with Ballantine's church because they opposed the partaking of communion by those who had not experienced conversion; and visits paid to Ballantine by such people as Jonathan Edwards (1703-1758), President Aaron Burr (1715/16-1757) of Princeton University, and Samuel Mather (1706-1785), one of his closest friends. There are daily entries concerning his ministerial duties, visits, family activities, illnesses in town (especially a smallpox epidemic in 1760), and an annual list of donations of food and fuel given to him by his parishioners. The diary contains information about slaves owned by various townspeople, murders committed in the region and punishments, Ballantine's attendance at local church councils and association meetings, preparation of his students for admission to Harvard, and the beginnings of trouble between the American Colonies and Great Britain during the 1770s. Ballantine also referred to a traveling show that was staged in Westfield in 1773, complete with wire-walkers.

Consists of correspondence, manuscripts, and documents of several members of the prominent Shippen family of Philadelphia in colonial, revolutionary, and early federal periods; some of which is related to the College of New Jersey and its move from Newark, to Princeton, N.J. Manuscripts include two notebooks of Joseph Shippen, written in Latin and English. The first is a letterbook dated 1749-1751, titled "Compendium Romana Historia" with its original paper wrappers; 44 leaves, It includes copies of letters of Joseph Shippen to his father, brother, and others, some of which deals with the move of the college of New Jersey from its location then in Newark, N.J. The second notebook is an "Oratio salutatoria habita in comitus Academicis novarcae in Nova-Caesaria, sexto calendas octobris, 1753" delivered by Joseph Shippen in October 1753 to the governing body of the College of New Jersey, and its president the Rev. Doctor Aaron Burr. It contains genealogical notes; 24 numbered pages; original wrappers covered with a floral wall-paper. The manuscripts also include the Last Will and Testament of William Shippen, dated Sept. 1, 1783; a biographical sketch of William Shippen written by his daughter, Mrs. Ann Shippen Livingston. Also found is a deed for land in Western New Jersey to William Shippen signed by Samuel Shoemaker, dated May 20, 1767; a portrait of William Shippen, Jr., drawn by a daughter of Samuel Blair; and Photostats of correspondence.

This collection consists of 47 handwritten pages by Charles H. Halsey entitled An Historical Sketch of the Town of Newark, which was presented by Halsey to the Newark Young Men's Society on April 22, 1833. It covers Newark's history from the original grant of the land by King Charles II of England to his brother James, the Duke of York, in 1664 to the census of Newark in 1826. Many notable early Newark citizens receive mention in the collection, among them Robert Treat, John Curtis, Jasper and John Crane, Abner and Thomas Pierson, Samuel Swain, Lawrence Ward, Thomas and Aaron Blatchly, Edward Ball, John and Richard Harrison, Thomas Huntington, Samuel Rose, Aaron Burr and Jonathan Dickinson.

Correspondence, reports, surveys, clippings, account books, maps, deeds, and other records relating to lands owned, developed, and exchanged by Nicholas Devereux in New York State. These papers include references to to the Erie Railroad, the Rossie Lead Mining Company, the Bank of Ellicottville, James Le Ray de Chaumont, Nicholas Devereux and Company, Devereux Land Office, Ellicottville Land Office, the Holland Land Company, and to the establishment of a shoe factory and other commercial enterprises in Utica, New York. Family correspondence (c. 1800-1880) refers to the development of business in Utica, New York and the surrounding area, and to such subjects as the suffering of Catholics in Ireland, De Witt Clinton, the trial of General William Hull, Aaron Burr, the building of the Appian Way, banking affairs in Albany, New York, reactions to the War of 1812, the policies of James Madison, landlord problems in Chenango County, charitable work, Catholicism, and Nicholas Devereux's founding of the American College in Rome. These papers contain legal and financial documents relating to Edwards's business activities and his legal career, most of which was carried on in New Haven. Also included are drafts of his political writings and speeches on the Federalist Party, Connecticut's charter government, and other topics. Most of Edwards's correspondence concerns his land speculation in Vermont, Pennsylvania, South Carolina and especially Connecticut's Western Reserve in Ohio. Major correspondents are William Neilson, John Read, Jr., Aaron Burr, Seth Tracy, Simon Perkins and George Swift. Edwards's correspondence with John Read, Jr. and a number of the legal documents reflect his activities as a special agent appointed to settle Loyalist claims following the Revolutionary War under the terms of the Jay Treaty.

Daily records document personal and family matters; affairs of the clergymen, including an account of a contested ordination in Amesbury parish in 1754 that involved a candidate who "went to hear Mr. Whitefield" and a short obituary of Aaron Burr; social and political life in Newburyport and Boston, including records of public fasts and thanksgivings, general elections, and schools; war news, including the closing of the King George's War, the events of the French and Indian War, and the siege of Havana in Aug. 1762. The diaries also contain extensive meteorological records that are arranged to match the respective entries in the Ames' Almanac, natural disasters that took place in Newbury and Boston areas -- fires, earthquakes, lightning strikes, storms, droughts, and epidemics.
