The Jack Chapman scrapbook includes newspaper clippings, photographs, color illustrated cards, ephemeral items and other sundry items documenting his playing and managing career from 1859 through the end of the 19th Century. This scrapbook provides excellent documentation of early baseball in New York and Louisville. Early material documents Chapman's tenure with the Enterprise and Atlantic clubs of Brooklyn from 1859 through the late 1860s and includes games accounts with leading New York teams such as the Hamilton, Mutual, Eckford and Eureka clubs. Other articles include retrospective accounts of his career, the Atlantics' 1864 trip to Utica, the 1877 Louisville Gambling scandal and biographical sketches of his contemporaries. Of note are articles about Louisville Director Zach Phelps and Hall of Famers Hugh Jennings, who played at Louisville, and Ned Hanlon, who played at Detroit. Numerous cartoons include color caricatures of baseball games, teams, players, a color illustration of Buffalo's Olympic Park, and a cartoon entitled "Shakespearean baseball." Ephemeral items include a price list from the J. C. Chapman & Co. Southern Baseball Emporium (Louisville), a printed list of player rules for Buffalo that forbade gambling c1888, and a certificate of the Eclipse Baseball Assn. of Louisville. Illustrations are pasted throughout the book including Leland Robinson (the Louisville Mascot), Detroit Wolverines (including Hanlon) as well as other major and minor league clubs.
